When NT01's go bad
I went out thinking i could get another DE out of these tires.
I got two sessions.
Spun in first session and tail happy in second.
Shame on me for going out thinking being at the wear bar still had life (banking on
The dots telling me there was enough life).
Lesson learned.
Pulled the wheels off and this:

unless they are old or have been used many times where they have now got hard you should be able to use this tire down to the cords no problem. Unfortunately with the R compound tires you can't judge how many heat cycles or tire age by the wear bars. With the Toyo RA1 the tire is fastest right before the belts show and I'm sure that is the same with the NT01.

Re: When NT01's go bad
thought the same exact thing as you - would be best right before the belts show and would have been perfect for one more day - boy did I think wrong.
On the inside of the tire it's hard as a rock (to the right of the huge booger line).
All the "sticky" rubber has worn off and left this hard durometer skateboard wheel like core.
Again - like you, I thought for sure these would have been sticky down to the cords.
That said, these things have seen a hard life this season and perhaps the heat cycles did them in sooner than I thought they would have.
Anyways - big lesson for me.

Re: When NT01's go bad
We have had a set of NT-01s sit around for about a year before we used them AFTER being heat cycled. Then ran them on and off for a year and a half without any problems. your tires have a lot of buildup on them, just needs to be scrubbed off or scrapped off. If you were on track for only a short period of time, i would bet they never wore the pick-up off and thats why you spun and were having trouble with the car. The guy i race with does this a few times a year. Goes out easy, gets lots of pick-up on the tires and then has lots of problems and losses confidence. Theres nothing wrong, but since there is so much pick-up on the tires it will lock-up and random, squirm in the corners, and just feel like crap. I jump in the car, 1-2 gear wheel spin out of the pits, work the car hard, and the tires are back. clean and working great. Just my opinion, but i find lappers, come across this more often due to pick-up being less common due to the lack of buildup on the track.

Re: When NT01's go bad
Thanks for the feedback - interesting thing is this booger line was 1/10th of what it is as shown above versus when I was at the track.
The thickness of this booger line didn't materialize to this extent until I drove home from the track (about 50 miles).
I'm curious if the feathering of the rubber on the inside of the tire (to the right of booger line) is common behavior of these tires.
Thanks for the feedback for now - more curious than anything about this as nobody I know really has too much experience with tire wear.

Really I read about people driving on these on the street and they have no problem then I get in their car and they feel like skates. Driving on the street adds up the heat cycles. Yes you can drive them on the street but they will cycle over and over and will never be as grippy as just using them for the track.

Those boogers should come right off, if placed on the front position, after one good hard lap or some side to side scrubbing. When exiting track try and stay off the boogers, if that is not an option try giving a brief side to side "scrubbing" of the tires right before you pull into the pits. That will minimize the booger build up.

Re: When NT01's go bad
When r compound have a lot of heat cycle it takes longer to get them at temp. Bit once hot they should be good up to the cord. I have record all my best time on toyo and nitto tires that where just like the one you ve shown on the pic! 2 lines!

Re: When NT01's go bad
U might also wanna check your alignment.
One time I spun out and it threw off my alignment cuz the shop didn't torque my camber bolts to 80+ ft lbs. Then I had way too much camber up front and had no traction at all. The New alignment fixed the problem after. Yes, I was getting similar build up like yours.
