What will make more power?
I'm scheduled to get my car tuned Thursday
The class I'm racing in only allows either a cone filter directly on the throttle body
Or a stock intake setup with either a stock filter or a k and n insert is acceptable
I've also seen some people pit a piece of cloth over the throttle body inlet which I'm not a fan of
What do you guys think would result in the most power
I have a cone on there as of now but trying to decide if I should hit the junkyard and grab a stock intake and get and a k and n filter maybe get some cooler air
If it's not a big difference I'll stick with what I got

Re: What will make more power?
What type of racing do you do? What RPM do you mostly care about? A filter directly on the throttle body will most likely give you the most top end performance however a filter directly on the throttle body is not ideal. You need some sort of an inlet pipe on it. Also you will have the problem with heat soak. The stock intake will give you a better mid range power band and will loose up top most likely to the filter directly on the throttle body. However on a dyno and on a track can be different. The cooler air from the stock intake will most likely be what you want to run. You can also simply install a stock intake and on the dyno pop it off and install the filter pretty easily to see the differences.

Will be dirt track racing on an oval paperclip one half-mile track mostly high rpm's they do not allow aftermarket intake's but they said it can be a cone filter on the throttlebody or a stock intake set up so I'm not sure what to do

What I would try to get away with is to mount the filter directly to the throttle body as you only really care about high RPM. Than build a filter box around the filter with a tube going out to get fresh air or from the headlight. Also make sure the filter you use has a velocity stack inside and not just a straight style filter. Since it is dirt I would also suggest a filter wrap as well.

Can you fit a stock ITR arm/airbox/cold air tube in there? It'll look stock, give you a bigger filter, and pull from outside of the engine bay all while not looking cheaty.

Re: What will make more power?
This was going to be my suggestion as well. On my ITR engine the stock intake (no resonator) with OEM filer made basically the same power as a short ram with K&N. Power bands were slightly different but not much at all.

Re: What will make more power?
IMO, any of the filters won't make any noticeable different as compare at a same mounting point because of the stock engine. With that said, mounting the filter in a stock tubed intake will receive more fresh air and therefor, don't loose power to heat soak. Notice I didn't "gain more power"
