Re: Transmission Fluid for your Track Car
I have wanted to run the FF Motul but have had a hard time finding it available outside of Kiwi and Im not sure he has any currently? Thats the hard thing about running that fluid, I like the availability of the redline at the track from the vendors that are always around in my area. I know west coast is different and its probably more available track side.
Mashimaro I had the same exp. with the Motul 300 as well as a straight redline 75-90
So it seems like a lot of us are running:
Motul FF-LSD Type 2
Redline Shockproof
Torco
Has anyone tried Amsoils gear oil for our transmissions? My friend is a dealer for them and has been trying to get me to try some, which I may do since Im running their 10-30 Dominator race oil.

Re: Transmission Fluid for your Track Car
I have tried Royal purple in my personal car and hated it. Even driving on the street it felt notchy and it was changed out within a week back to Honda MTF. In the Club racing S2000 we built at work we were running Redline MTL and that was giving us a notchy trans after about 3-4 laps. We switched to Honda MTF and the gearbox has been worry free ever since.
Its so hit or miss with these things, the story seems to be different between one person to the other. I think fluids (especially transmission) comes down to an individual case basis. Its good to know whats out there, but I dont think running a certain fluid because someone recommended it is the right way to go about it either. Keep trying fluids/combinations until you find something you like

If the Redline is cheaper then the Amsoil, I might give that a try next.

Re: Transmission Fluid for your Track Car
I've been running Honda MTF (in my ITR trans) without any issues, but it's time for a fluid change and I figure if there's a better option out there I may as well make the switch. I didn't see the Motul FF-LSD stuff listed on their website, is there any more reading material on that stuff?

Re: Transmission Fluid for your Track Car
I had been running Motylgear Technosynthese 75W90 Gearbox on my Rally Civic gearbox (GearX 3,4,5 / Kaaz LSD) and it had been working fine. I'd have a bit notchy shifts but never really had grinds and I'm shifting A LOT and mixes of cluth and clutchless downshifts depending on the turns.
I still need to do a gearbox teardown and see how the Synchros are, but I plan on running Motul FF-LSD Type 2 from now on.
I typically replace my fluid every 2-3 events which is 100-130 stage miles and another 200-300 transit miles per event.

Re: Transmission Fluid for your Track Car
thanks for the tip on the Motul FF fluid. i gotta talk to my local Motul rep to see if he can get this stuff in as well.
known - yah the Motul Gear 300 seems to be sensitive to certain LSD's (clutch types of course). i have a feeling that the Redline my local shop put in was probably the same straight-out-of-bottle stuff you tried as well, which does not work well on our LSD's.
great info in this thread guys.

Re: Transmission Fluid for your Track Car
Depends mostly on the diff you are running.
In my track car I have used a 50/50 Torco MTF and Torco RTF mix which seems to work well (Mfactory metal plate).
The Rally(cross) car (Kaaz diff) I am still searching for the ideal fill but have done everything from GM Syncromesh, Kaaz Fluid (^^^= expensive), Torco RTF, etc. I am looking to run the Motul FF2 but the last time I called Kiwi was still waiting for a shipment and he is the only one that can get it.

Kiwi told me the 300 LS is very similar to the Type FF2 so you can give that a shot. I might do the same if I can't get any FF2. But he told me it was going to be a couple weeks and that was a couple weeks ago. But I don't really need any fluid until April anyway.

Re: Transmission Fluid for your Track Car
redline MT90 in my current trans - changed yearly and sees 2-3 events per year plus some street time.
i'm debating on what to run in the new tranny - ITR with GearX 4.7 final and factory LSD, and will have synchrotech carbon synchros.
so, interesting topic.

Re: Transmission Fluid for your Track Car
My stock itr trans has 205000km on it, been boosted for 12 years and been tracking it for 6 years. I estimate about 4000 track km on it. I have always used honda mtf and I change it every five events. I have zero grinds, and the gearbox is easy to shift. For a stock trans what could be a better fluid than honda mtf? Fwiw power levels are 330whp 1-2 400whp 3-5

Re: Transmission Fluid for your Track Car
arise from the dead!
here's some stuff I've learned throughout the years w/my own experiences..
For you guys that just daily w/OEM LSD, Honda MTF is perfectly fine.
For you guys who track often w/OEM LSD, I've gotten away with Honda MTF for years w/out issues, and with longer drain intervals (before 2006). But as I got faster at the track and more knowledgeable about things, running a 5050 mix of Honda MTF and torco MTF or just 100% torco MTF is much MUCH better for your syncros and gears overall. And also flushing intervals should be done more often than later. You can tell if your fluid is losing its kick when your shifting becomes more notchy as others have mentioned.
btw, Honda MTF has gotten thinner in the recent years too (for better gas mileage related reasons) even tho its cheaper than Torco fluid, you're gonna pay the price eventually if you stay 100% honda MTF and track your car. I would suggest going 100% torco MTF for you OEM LSD users who track. If you want even better fluid, go Torco RTF.
I'm currently using an OS Giken clutch type LSD (as of 2012) in my K-series transmission with 100% Torco RTF that I flush out after every 3-4 track days (usually 4th, cuz I milk it!). This stuff has worked perfectly fine and has held up great with this clutch type LSD and is not as expensive as other fluids on the market. I don't use any modifiers either, just straight up RTF.
but like others have mentioned, its kind of a trial and error process with whatever brand LSD + fluid you decide to go with and how that LSD reacts to the flud.
Just letting you know that torco RTF works great and is more cost effective than other fluids no the market and should be one of your top 3 trans fluid choices

Re: Transmission Fluid for your Track Car
My first experience with torco was disappointing. Took my DD civic to a track day and changed out the honda mtf the night before. The now apparent "tired" synchros starting grinding third on the way to the track! Had to run the whole day crunching third when it never did before that. Anyways, i'd say it works better on a fresh trans vs an older one.
Anyone who swears by oem mtf or penn synchromesh on track days or racing is nuts. Its terrible especially for k-series boxes.

Re: Transmission Fluid for your Track Car
Just ordered my second case of torco rtf. Thinner than the ff lsd/ 300ls so it gets through the stack better (I'm told). So far, my diff likes it better.

Re: Transmission Fluid for your Track Car
What about older condition, stock transmissions, no lsd? I've used Honda MTF on my stock civic with good luck. Ran 3 events so far. But that has recently been converted to DD duty and a GSR has taken it's place as the toy car.

Re: Transmission Fluid for your Track Car
When having a dedicated track car, all moving parts have to be considered maintenance parts and constant replacement should be a must. Good quality parts just go so far before they fail. Here we don't recommend you use synchromesh type oils, we run Torco mtf and rtf in all the track cars we service and we have no problem with any. I must say that we open the transmissions at least once a year with some of the test trannys being open every event to check for wear and tear.
Don't forget that there is only 2 qts of oil in it and if there is no tranny cooler the oil will degrade fast. These transmissions were design for daily day driving and are not supposed to be use in extreme conditions without expecting it to fail at some point. That is why we have developed the carbon synchros we offer. They work better than oem in this type of hard conditions giving your tranny better life.
