Default Renting Trailer from Uhaul by default, few Q's and looking for helpful guidance.

I looked all around my area locally for trailer rentals but have not been too successful and have ultimately contacted Uhaul by default.

They have some odd renting policies. They claim they can either only rent for 24 hours local for $60. or One way for 2 days at a time for $118.. So I asked the guy how I'd plan to get my car back from where I'd deliver it to if I needed it longer than the 24 hour deal, and he said, when I get to where I was going, I'd need to re-reserve it and then re-rent it for the return? Does this work or could I potentially get stuck without a trailer for the way home? Maybe I should just reserve it from my one way destination ahead of arrival? Or maybe I'm just confusing matters too much.

Has anyone of you done this? Or do you know of another way to do it or around it? Or am I just stuck with this method of transporting my car to the track with a Uhaul trailer?

The Uhaul rep claimed an unladen weight of 1,800 lbs for the trailer, does this sound correct?

And I'm guessing after readin in the archives I'll need a class III hitch and ball? Should I purchase this ahead of time or wait to get to Uhaul and have them bang me for whatever inflated NY price they may set it at?

And as I understand it, also after reading in the archives, I don't need to be wired up because their trailers work on a sliding sprung tongue that applies the brakes?

Sorry for what may be obvious questions but I'll be doing this for the first time with the new truck and just want to get all the facts straight before everything gets too close, and of course would love any helpful information you all may share.

Thanks, Anton

Anton, just drive it.
Unless you're also planning on bringing you BBQ grill and treating us all to a nice feast.

Make sure the trailer comes with a spare tire or two. My friend was left waiting in a Taco Bell parking lot for 2 hours waiting for roadside assistance to show up and mount a new tire...

How did you know?

Rib eye steaks and a Kegger too

Nahh Ed, there's a few reasons I decided to do this, the two biggest were that the wife is commin and doesn't really care to drive alone like last time and that after last year with those 2 mishaps I'd rather be prepared than stuck, as well we bought the truck with this purpose in mind anyway.

Plus woudln't it be more fun for a bunch of you guys to hop a ride together to dinner and whatnot?

Speaking from experience, do NOT wait until the last minute and let UHaul hold you over a barrel for the hitch. Shop around in advance and go with a reputable installer.

In my experience Uhaul uses a 4 pin connector for lights only since all their trailers have hydraulic surge brakes. You might want to get a standard RV 7 pin connector installed and get an adapter for 7 pin to 4 pin.

the weight sounds about right. the Uhaul trailers are really heavy

I am a U-Haul trailer rental expert as I have done it many times.

Here in CA we have corporate owned U-Haul centers in addition to moving/storage places that rent the equipment. I have never had a problem with round trip weekend rentals at the U-Haul centers, but the other places would only rent one way if they even had anything available.

If you have the option, try to find a U-Haul center and you won't have to deal with multiple rental agreements and other BS.

You will not need an electric brake controller but will need 4-pin wiring capability for lights. 1800lbs seems light. At one time I was told 2200 lbs.

As have I.

Only think I can add, is here locally, you MUST have AT LEAST a 3/4 TON tow rig.

4 wires for lights/turn.

I rented "local" and paid for 2 days (weekend trip to SoCal)

Currently the truck is set up to tow 5100 lbs, current weight of car and trailer together is 4300 lbs.

No prob, the truck already has a 7 pin and I called a shop for a 7-4 pin connector.

They asked what the tongue weight would be and advised that it most likely is at least a 2" ball, but needed to know the drop, how do I measure or figure this?

Yeah my local genius 800 hotline said that I could do either a 24 hour local ONLY or, a One way for 2 days because that's all the reservation computer allowed.

Thanks again guys

Call me this weekend. I will be flying in from the UK maybe Friday night or Saturday. I rented from Uhaul in the past and can give you the info you need.

Thanks Dave, ironically I called and left you a message earlier today. Talk to you soon, and have a safe trip.
