Default A real Aero thread

So I did some searching around in this section and didn't find a lot of applicable material. I think a solid aero thread could help a lot of people out.

I have spent the better part of two years doing almost nothing else but researching and testing aero theory's. Have to give some props to my friend Josh who is a big help in understanding alot of the math and more complex theory. To be honest chump car has been a great proving ground for some of these ideas. So you will see me refer to it a lot.

I will be adding to the thread as I come across good info, you guys are welcome to chime in with anything you have the would be HELPFUL!

First off is a link to one of (in my opinion) the best wing manufacturers. This is just a general advice page on rear wings and aero, and it does a great job making some complex theory's understandable. Also has a good recipe for a fluid that is good for airflow visualization testing.

I have recently been working on increasing speed and downforce without drag, as this is very important in chump car since fuel mileage is such a constraint. Before this most of my aero experience was on autox setups wich are usually high drag. On our mostly stock car we were able to pick up about 3mph on the straights, and shave 4.5sec per lap with minimal mods. This was all done while maintaining the same fuel consumption of about 8min/gal.

This site has been a great resource for low-drag designs....you can spend a lot of time over there. They focus is mostly fuel mileage, but the designs can be tweaked to increase performance and lower drag if done right.

Ill continue to dig through my old material and keep posing helpful stuff!

One of our lower-drag autox rear wing designs from last year. We had pretty good results with this setup. Should be improved next year with more rigidity.

Note the endplates are larger in front of the element like they should be...and they have gurney flaps bent along the vertical edge to promote attached flow on the outer sections of the wing (this is normally where flow starts to become turbulent and separates.

A couple more where you can see the height well. Regulation is 6" above the roof for this class. Front splitter is birch and goes the the axle centerline.
