No, not practical for the street. They require heat to work effectively and they squeal like dieing pigs on a street car. If you want to use Porterfield pads use the R4S.

The R4S is very good on the street. But really, if you're not racing it, then even OE pads will do. Racing pads really are designed to be grabby at high temps (which you'll never probably not see on the street). Another street/light track pad to consider would be Axxis Ultimates.

I've been very happy with the EBC Greenstuff pads for both street and open lapping. They've been on the car for about a year and a half of daily use and maybe four lapping/instruction weekends. Used the Hawk Blacks several years ago on the street and they were good but super dusty.

Definately not for the streets for the same reason that DB1-R81 mentioned.
There is not point spending that much money on a set of race pads for the street. In fact, it wont be a safety item at all.

I've heard that the the R4 dust is a lot more caustic on the wheels too.
I haven't had any problems with the R4S's though.

I love my Porterfield R4 pads on my racecar, but they're too aggressive for street use. My personal favorite right now for street driving is the Performance Friction pads you can get at autozone. They're cheap, and work very well for street or towing applications. I haven't tried to race on them so I can't say how they'll hold up to racing. Brake dust from the PF pads not bad at all, and they don't squeak. I've talked to a lot of people who like the EBC green stuf pads for street/autocross use. It's the people who try roadracing on them who find they wear out really quickly.

I'm happy with the EBC Greenstuffs on street and open lapping but have the larger later 91 Civic/Integra front brake conversion. They do get hot on track and I can see how they might not be good for the the heat of racing and late brake passes.

i had a lot of problems with the ebc's leaving pad material on the rotor. it probably had something to do with autocrossing on them.
stock pads for the street. i actually use stock pads for autocross now too, as they have a much better release characteristic then the ebc greenstuff i tried.
nate-who routinely gets his rotors a golden color and the pads smoking. at autocrosses none the less.

Wow. That has to be the first person on here that has been happy with EBC anything...

Re: Porterfield R4 Race brake pads good for daily use on Integra? (13 Sec GSR)
As others have been pointing out, the Porterfield R4 compound needs to be up at much higher temperatures before they start grabbing with the same dynamic coefficient of friction that you'd expect at the track. In colder weather, they are actually quite a bit worse than (Type-R) OEM pads.
And, I also agree that it's not only the extra dusting, but the fact that they are much more caustic, and will chemically bond with the paint if wet and allowed to dry on. My experience has been that the R4 sticks both on the wheels, and on the lower portion of the doors and rear bumper (if used on the rears as well). The problem hasn't been anything that clay bars and a few hours of careful detailing didn't fix, but both the wheels and car were well waxed before hand.
For daily use, I'd suggest the Porterfield R4S, as they have a bit more bite even when cold, and don't squeal like a bus when stopping.

Charlee......I used R4, R4S, and HP+
I used to have R4 and R4S on my 325i. R4 is NOT good for street, too much dust and too harmful to the rotor <---on street, the R4 pad cannot get warm/hot enough to do the job and the result is chew up the rotor. For street R4S is a much better choice.
I used HP+ on my R as the first set of perfromance brake pad.....they're pretty good..... nice cold bit and ok perfromance on track (HPDE event). The things I don't like about HP+ is the brake dust and noise.....I switch to R4S after 1 year of HP+. R4S is a lot better in brake pedal feel, noise level and amount of dust.
On the side note....when I had HP+ on all 4 corner, the rear-end of the car was not stable during high speed braking. It got a big improvement after I use Axxis Ult. in rear. Now I'm using Stock pad in front and Axxis Ult. in rear.
I give R4S ans Axxis Ult. a big

From my experience, when used daily, the R4 pads still perform well even when they are cold- comparable to OEM pads. Of course, they give even more stick when heated to operating temps. Only down side, they are too expensive to waste on normal braking situations.

R4S work great on the track too. On a 2300lb G1 Teg with 9.6" brakes/rear drums on R-tires, after almost a 40 minute lapping session the R4S had great bite. The pedal went south due to overheated fluid that was probably as old as the car that I was too lazy to change... ...But the pads never gave up... 20K miles on them, 2 autocross seasons, 2 track days and they still have about 30% material left. No noise whatsoever, some dusting...

my new R4S pads were totally gone and flaked after one weekend at the track. i do NOT recommend them for track use. get the R4 pads for track, R4S for street, as they were made for.

I disagree. I've had several situations that I was glad to have the R4S's. They rewuire very little time to heat up to be effective. The only drawback to these pads in my opinion is the amount of brake dust these pads produce. They have been on my car for over 3 years know on the same pads. Much better than OEM.

I had use R4S for the track (HPDE) in last season and they did well, however since I started using R-compound, I found the R4S became not enough (braking power) as compare when I was running them with street tires.
I think different type of tires (street / R-compound) will have very different effect on the brake pad's perfromance.
