Default Linear Steering?

I am reading EVO magazine, and they described the Renault Clio 197's steering as "Linear, but ridiculously light". Since this is probably the most driver oriented forum, I thought I'd ask: What is "linear steering"? Is it desirable on the street, track or both?

Default Re: Linear Steering? (JMelt4)

Most cars with power steering have a progressive hydraulic curve. They require less effort the more you turn. The idea is that the steering will have good feedback with slight turns at highway speeds yet still be nimble in your average Walmart parking lot. Some manufacturers do this better than others. And when the hydraulic advantage isn't right, the car can feel awkward and uncomfortable to drive hard. "Linear" would be a word I'd use to describe a car that got it right. One that goes where you think it and doesn't bring attention to itself. One that behaves the way you'd expect.
