Re: HPDE Tire Choice
I would be looking at either the RE-71R or RS3... they are both better then the ZII. Ive had the ZII and liked them a lot but the RS3 was just a faster tire at the track!

Re: HPDE Tire Choice
I've been impressed with the BFG Rival S so far in a 215/45/16. It's crazy to me how far tire technology has come even in the last 10 years. These Rivals in just normal daily driving in 70 degree temps pick up pebbles in the rubber compound like R comps of just a few years ago.

I run Hankook RS-3's 205/45/16 on my Acura Integra for AutoX and Trackday's. They have over 8 AutoX and 4 track day's that include 2 day's at USAIR, Road America (120 miles) and Waterford Hills. They are holding up nicely and i hope to get at least one more track day out of them before I replace them.

I've run RE71Rs for autocross and HPDE on an Integra and 15 WRX. They are great tires, but yeah, not very heat tolerant. I get 120 autocross runs + 5k street miles out of them on the WRX, about 180-190 on the Integra.
The Rival S is softer than the RE71R . . . if you want a tire that will last you a bit, find an original Rival (if you can), they are a harder compound and handle heat better.
The RS3 and Star Spec II are both much more tolerant of heat. The new Maxxis VR1, Victra VR-1 | Maxxis Tires USA, is supposed to be close to the RE71, but with better heat tolerance. It's cheap and Maxxis is known to last a long time. Grassroots Motorsports is working on a comparo now, but I have a feeling that could be the droid you are looking for (will go on my Integra sooner than later too).

Re: HPDE Tire Choice
After reading everyone's experiences and the grassroots article someone posted the link to... I'm thinking of getting the RE71Rs.
However, I keep hearing they don't handle heat well. would the tires begin to feel greasy after a 20 min HPDE session in summer weather?
My Falkin Azenis get 'greasy' during HPDE sessions. Granted, they're almost a decade old, but I remember when they were new, they still got this way.

I vote Dunlop. Great combo of grip, heat tolerance, tread life, and price IMO.
I've had Z1 star specs, Z2, and Z2 star specs. I really like them for dual duty (street/track).

Re: HPDE Tire Choice
Nitto NT450.
Those were the tires I used at my first event. Townsend Bell (Indy Lights champion, CART/IRL/IndyCar driver, F1 test driver) was the head instructor that day.
Everyone said it's better to learn on tires that aren't as grippy. I can see how that makes sense. The limit is reached sooner, and usually at a slower speed compared to race tires.

There are lots of good options out there. Nitto NT-01, BFG Rivals, Bridgestone RE-11A. Ive heard the Star Spec ZII are pretty decent if youre on a budget.
