Default Headliner Question (Getting a custom cage soon)

I was wondering if I should keep the headliner in before I get my cage? Are there any other racing classes besides showroom stock, that require the headliner? THe only reason why I'm thinking about it is if I get the cage built with the headliner and I have to remove it, the gap between the roof and the cage will be big.

Not only will the gap be large once you pull the headliner...you might not be *able* to pull the headliner with a cage welded in place. I had to remove my bolt-in to get the headliner and sunroof out of the car. A custom cage will be worse, as the builder (if he's any good) will work hard to put the tubing as close to the headliner as possible.

The guy that's building the cage is Mitch Piper. He suggested that I take it out along with the sunroof. How hard is it to remove?

I'm really not looking at the weight factor here. I have a sunroof so I believe in order to remove it, I have to take the headliner out. Also I think if I take the headliner out, I'm not sure I want to go through the hassle of putting it back on. I just don't want to take something out that doesn't really need to go.

IMO, if you're at the point where you're getting custom welded cage, it's about time to lose the headliner. The only reason I can see to keep it is for a little sound dampening. Having to work around the headliner, including trying not to damage it while welding will seriously limit the builder. I'm sure it can be done though.

As for removing it... remove any plastic molding around the edges of it and pull it off. If you want to keep it for future use, be careful with the plastic clips as they'll break or pull through the headliner. If you're going to be throwing it away, then just rip it off.

Other than SS, none of the SCCA road racing classes require that the headliner be retained. Oh - Production class rallying still does, I believe but I am sure about road racing.
