Default EK Rally project

Hello fellow H-T'ers

Here's something a little different. Our 1999 Honda Civic EK rally car.

The car is set-up to run in the P2 class (Production 2WD). The only modification are a LSD and suspension, no engine work at all.

It's been an on going project that spanned over 2 years and we're debuing the car this weekend in the Perce-Neige Rally in Maniwaki, Canada.

Here's a couple of pics for you guys. Please visit our website for further information about the car, the pilots and the series.

Thank you !

The car is still very modest, you can say it's the basic requirements for racing. There's still alot of R&D to be done on the car before it can finish on the podium.

This car was built to compete at a National level rallying, but if RallyX is your goal, you can just pick up any car for cheap, gut it, strap on a helmet and rock on, no need to build a cage/skid plate/Terra trip.

Here's a pick of us at a rallyX this summer (I'm in the Miata, my two friends are in Subaru's).

The results

What suspenders do you have on there? I saw a hotbits logo, is that what you're using? If so then ditch it, its not a great handling suspension and it will get you a DNF pretty soon. Another thing is suspension travel, check to see how much "droop" you have in the rear. Also remember to plate the top of the shock towers in the front.Otherwise thats a great car to run.
You can also install a different final drive, it will really help you a LOT and you can still run it in production (no one is going to know) :D

Look up http://specialprojectsms.com/index.php?categoryID=6 I run a Gear-X 6.33 in my DC5 and love it, perfect for gravel.

Thank you for the advice... Hot Bits being one of our major sponsors, I really doubt that we will ditch they're product. The ride height you see there was before the Hot Bits, the droop travel with the tender springs is quite impressive with this particular model.

What experience do you have personally with that company to assume that we will not finish our event? I've heard nothing but praises from this company.

Our first few rallies are winter rallies, so we are more concerned about snowbanks/traction than jumps for this part of the season. in spring, we will adress the shock towers as we go.

Being a production car (P2) there is very little that we can do to the car in general, the diff and FD is one of them, we are running a very short gear set to maximize the output of our D16Y7 powerhouse.

I use hotbits as well on my Gp5 Integra. They are the jam. I certainly would not worry about them, they are probably the best setup around right now.

Thank you,

You good Sir, are a rarity on Honda-Tech, someone with actual knowledge, giving a proper response.

Any advice on how to set it up ?

If you have the doubles, they have a huge range. I was advised to start full soft on rebound and compression and go from there.

Full soft was too soft on compression so I dialed in about 1/4 more compression to stop the droop under braking.

And a couple clicks on rebound at the same time.

I haven't played with it more as of now. Test more in the spring.

Nice to see an EK rally car!

I used Hotbits on a Sentra and I really liked their damping characteristics. My primary struts were DMS(tough as hell) but they made the rally car "skate" most of the time-no matter what adjustments I tried. I did bend the shaft on a rear Hotbits strut when I was running the car very high(very little shaft overlap) in order to straddle boulders in an unreasonably rough California Rally Series event .

But I have no struts anymore, so no worry about bending loads! I am also buiding a 97 EK Hatch, but for G2. Cage will be finished by next week. Shocks will be custom Bilsteins.

I've won a national championship on Hot Bits and many rallies--never had a DNF due to them. They've worked great for us.

I also don't advocate cheating, even if nobody can tell you're doing it.

thats awesome!

honda rally! haha.

i took my 97 hatch on our rallyX last season, it was fun. it was my first race. so i guess i did well, then we picked up a 95 corolla that we beat the living crap out of. now ive got a 2.5RS and picked up first place in our race last sunday.

its a blast, i would love to to national rallys. but i think right now rallyX is fine with me. maybe later ill tear the subaru apart!

good job!
