Driving Glove Choices
Well, due to a lovely rodent making a nest out of BOTH of my pairs of gloves, I am in the market for new driving gloves. I searched, and found out that Alpinestars wear out quickly, and that if I am a stunna, I only need the left glove, as my right needs to be ungloved to "feel the transmission".
They need to be SFI (or FIA, or whatever it is these days) approved, and I would prefer they didn't cost TOO much, but I will pay more for quality.
They will be used in two cars, one has a suede wheel, and the other has a stock Honda plasticy wheel. Will this change what is needed?
Thanks folks!

Can you even buy gloves individually without buying the pair?
Maybe if you are buying directly from the manufacturer, but not a dealer that keeps sets in stock. At least I wouldn't if I was a dealer.

Scroll down to the Gran Prix 2 Gloves. They were originally $115 on closeout for $92. FIA Homologated etc.. Multiple colors. I am thinking about picking these up myself. Of course you can check out others while you are on that page.
I have G-Force Nomex G5 Racing gloves now. They are their best one that OG sells from G-Force and only $50 and have a good fit, but they have a leather palm which is fine, but once you feel suede on suede you'll never go back.

I keep hearing that. What do you mean? If suede on suede is as good as riding bareback like I hear, then I will go that route. How do suede gloves grip on a normal wheel?

Re: Driving Glove Choices (RacerBowie)
Be careful of the Sparco gloves. Not that they aren't good gloves but if you race with any organization that requires the glove to be fully lined with Nomex, anything earlier than the newer models (the Blizzard, Wave and Hurricane models are all fully Nomex lined).
All of the G-Force SFI-rated gloves are fully lined with Nomex.

BG, I have a pair of Simpsons that I bought for around $65 at the Simpson World storefront here in CLT (listed at 69 here http://www.saferacer.com/siporagl.html). Has been an excellent glove so far (far better than the OMP gloves I had previously at 20 to 30% less cost).
think they are these in black:

So many options!
Howard, two questions: 1)Does SCCA require the layer of Nomex? 2)how much less protection is offered by the lack of a layer of nomex for the palm?
Adam, have you tried Suede palmed? I know you have a suede wheel...
Anyone: Do suede palms grip a "normal" wheel decently?

hbennet is right. the gloves that G-force carries are completely lined. So be aware of this and also be minful that sparco is a name brand with more notoriety than g-force. Do not let that fool you, i love my gloves and they ( g-force and thier dealers) hold to that gaurantee of manufacturer craftmanship and quality.

The leather palms on these aren't as "candied" as they look, its more fiberous (not sure how I'd classify it - maybe just a very soft leather). But in answer to your question, no, just these and my OMPs which had a different palm/finger liner but since I threw them out, I cannot now recall. Both gloves I had worked great w/ the Momo wheel, I have never used these w/ a stock (944) wheel or karting but did use the OMPs with both and thought it worked fine. Currently I use my Mechanics gloves for karting and haven't autoxed in so long it hasn't been a concern.
If you hold off a week or so, I have to come down there to pick up a trailer hitch so I can bring them for you to try. For some reason, Simpson charges a ton for some things and much less for others (but I do NOT like their balaclavas and socks fwiw - much prefer Sparco for that).

My gloves that got "appropriated" were from racer wholesale, so I know the G Force Line are good gloves. I am just trying to find out of the extra feel of the suede is worth the cost, or if I lose enough burn protection to be willing to give up the added feel.

I use these ironclad gloves. I love them. I used to have a set of g-force ones. The high end glove without the padding and it wore thru the leather in about 8 months. I got these for free, but would buy another set instantly if I ever had to. I'm not really sure what they are made of but have a special 3M grip material on all the parts of your hand that would grip the wheel. I have a leather wheel and they feel great on it. These are also SFI rated.
If you'd like to try em on just let me know. I'll be driving thru atlanta this weekend.

Re: Driving Glove Choices (RacerBowie)
Bowie - after one and a half years worth of use and then months of storage in a plastic box with the rest of my racing outfit, my G Force gloves' palms became hard and very, very slippery.
I know this sounds unlikely, but color can be important. At the ARRC enduro, Scott was trying to communicate to Renee and I using hand signals. Black gloves against a black car == not so much. Obviously radios are the fix but it may be something to consider.
The other observation with the G Force gloves is that the pinky is too long for me. There's about a half inch of unused glove at the end of both pinky fingers. So try stuff on before you buy if you can. I think the store at VIR has OMP and possibly Sparco stuff on hand to check out.

I also had the same experience with mine. Some leather treatment might have solved it , but I never got around to trying it. I'm sticking with non-leather gloves from now on anyway.

I have short, stumpy fingers (go figure, I have a short, stumpy self) so I have long ago given up finding ANY glove, racing or otherwise, that fits my fingers.
Planning on blue gloves in case the radios go out. Had a pair of orange gloves way back in the day that were fantastic for signaling, then I had to go and paint the damn car orange too!
Ryan, do you have a link on the Ironclad gloves? red x's abound. edit: nevermind, you fixed it!

They are very hard to find. If you search google for "ironclad sfi gloves" there is one place that sells them.

White padded palms/fingers should help this from my experience. Also, I kinda like the padding - I don't think my old gloves were padded and I do recall that being a nice to have on these.
