Default b18c exhaust for Track purposes

What is the recommended exhaust setup for track use?
Is 2.5" straight pipe with high flow muffler better than using mid downpipe?
i am running on b18c motor and plan on some head/block upgrades in the future.

What track do you plan to run at? Most tracks nowadays have noise regulations, so you might want to look into that. Plan ahead. Chances are you will be going to different places. It kind of sucks to show up at a track that will not let you run your car and sends you home.

valid point, laguna seca is 90-92dB and all other northern CA tracks are 103dB (Thunderhill and Sonoma)

assuming noise is not an issue, i want to understand if track cars usually have straight pipes..while drag cars just a short downpipe? will resonator restrict the flow?

That's just it... rarely will you find a track without a noise restriction.
Lookup or rather google racing exhaust using Honda tech in the search.

to be honest, it's hard to be quiet N/A without a cat. if you run a 2.5" exhaust, a 2.5" HFC, and a 2.5" straight-through Magnaflow muffler (the oval one, not round), then you should have decent flow and be quiet enough to pass the dB restrictions.

I'm not sure about the rest of you...but having a quieter car makes a session out on the track way less fatiguing.

Noise reduction is less fatiguing, agree..makes sense..

Is 24" Resonator, midpipe, plus spoon muff a good setup for efficient flow? 2.5" all the way...

Why a spoon muff? you have money falling out your behind? Save your money for better things.
Vibrant, magnaflow,
12-24 resonator will suffice.
Seriously... google race exhaust using Honda tech... we have posted many good pics and information about what works and what will get the noise police to visit you in the paddock.
Diameter, length, resonators, mufflers, downpipes, LCA dump etc... its all in the one or two threads.

My old setup was 3" piping, 24"x3" magnaflow resonator and a 3" magnaflow muffler. Sounded nice and never got flagged at Lagnuna.

If you can, it is nice to be able to attach a short elbow at the exit of the muffler so you can direct the exhaust away from the sound meter. The elbow probably wouldn't be needed at most tracks with higher decibel limits (say 101-103db), but definitely could be helpful for tracks like Laguna with its 90-92db limit. - Jim

Not a track car, just an autoX one, but we've got strict noise limits at our local site since it's in a neighborhood (95dBa). I run 3" on my B18C CRX using two 12" Dynomax resonators and a small case Magnaflow knock off (VMS Racing I think), which sounds nearly exactly the same as my old big case Magnaflow and 2.5". This is no cat on either setup.

is the 3" on a turbo car, i'm assuming? if so, the turbo helps to tone it down a lot. a 3" N/A setup (not sure why anyone would do such a thing, though) would be really noisy.

OP: you should be good with a 2.5" exhaust and most any of these suggestions. a couple resonators or a cat along with a decent muffler should work. a detachable bend at the muffler tip is a good suggestion as well (if they are actually using decibel meters). 95dB is pretty generous. you are lucky it's decent, but at the same time, unlucky to have one (our autox doesn't have a restriction..yet).

I have a full 3" turbo downpipe to tip, no cat or resonator, and its really pretty quiet. Gotta love having the turbo to keep things quiet.

2.5" aluminum with vbands with largest resonator you can fit with turn down exhaust before the fuel tank. Make axle back portion with muffler just incase too loud at track.

have always thought about running an aluminum exhaust. how's it hold up? when do you make the transistion to aluminum?

This is what my exhaust sounds like inside an E36 as it gets its doors blown off. stock 97 ITR header with 3" exhaust into a 40" long glass pack. Go to 40 seconds into the video.
