20CiviC02Si's "TK (Time Killer)" Project
If you're wondering why i designated it "Time Killer" it's because i have nothing but time to kill since my girl left for the peace corp.
Well i purchased this 1999 Civic Si from my good friend Tracy Geiger (CivicSista) last year. It has pretty much been built into a SSC car right off the showroom floor. I was pretty tapped last year, so i decided to start putting as much away as i possibly could in order to have a budget to work with. Just attending some local track days with the likes of WMHM and Wangfest. Helping instruct as best i can. Now i have a starting budget, i have been sourcing parts, finding what deals i can.
It's officially been a year, i have somewhat of a working budget. My girlfriend joined left two days ago to go to Albania for the Peace Corps, i've had nothing but free time to start working on it.
Goal: Build it to be NASA TTD/PTD compliant. Testing out it's current setup with a few minor changes to make it more competitive. If i am within a 1.5 seconds of the track records, then i know that it will be competitive in PTD (wheel-to-wheel).
My parts pile is small but includes:
SPC Caster/Camber UCAs (pretty sure they're not ITS compliant, but can be swapped)
Koni Sport Shocks/Ground Control Coilovers (Picking up this weekend, need to change spring rates)
Fastline Short Shifter
Skunk2 Rear Camber Kit (Thanks vtecjj)
Going to take a closer look at the GCR later tomorrow.
However here is the progress i've made on the build:
"TK" as i bought it:
Removed all the vinyls.

Re: 20CiviC02Si's "TK (Time Killer)" Project
Finally today was the day to get in deep on this car! Got bit a few times when some of the plastic panels snapped, however majority of it is now out. As well as the carpet. Tomorrow the headliner will be getting pulled, and hopefully able to saw out what's left of the rear seat.
Pics of today's progress:
This panel was the biggest PITA ever. Plus it bit me back as i ripped it from it's home. Bastard!
A little something to look forward to. Removed the rest of the padding on both halves so that i can cut out the metal frames later.
All the trim that holds the headliner in plus some seat belt hardware.
Finally majority of the carpet is out. Bits and pieces still need to be removed.
If you're planning on having a full blown race car that's gutted and caged. Take my advice! Don't start with a Showroom Stock prepped car!

Don't know who did all the harness mounting, however once the carpet was ripped up i found nothing but holes drilled everywhere. I also need to get some new harness hardware because whoever did it last used like a 3" eye bolt to mount the submarine belt, so i have 2 and 3/4" of bolt hanging from the bottom of the car.
I have my work cut out for me over these next few weeks. Should have it prepped for Wangfest, May 28th.
If you have any input or advice, i would greatly appreciate it. I've only had experience with my old EP3. So working on cars equipped with B series and double wish bone is new to me. Although it does seem easier!

Re: 20CiviC02Si's "TK (Time Killer)" Project
So today i decided that it'd be a good day to replace the worn cam seal that has been leaking little by little. Upon removing the valve cover, i find this:
Immediately i check the oil in the pan as well as the coolant, however no signs of a head gasket on it's way out. Coolant was clear and green, and the oil still looked like oil. Think it was caused by condensation.
Does anyone have any input on this?

I'm guessing condensation. Had the same buildup on my brand new motor that was on the engine stand in my garage. Probably from only using a heater when I was working in there then it cooling to freezing temperatures. It ran fine after.

20CiviC02Si, scary about the valve cover build up...can you run a breather setup in your class? Might help with that issue.
Thanks for sharing your progress!

Ok well i'm stuck on the gutting process. Attempted to remove the headliner, which i got majority of it out. However my progress has come to a screeching halt. The damn visor clips right next to the dome light are pinned in between my roll cage. I have no idea how they are fastened to the ceiling, screw or just plastic clip.
Trying to find a way to cut them out, haven't been successful yet....

The holes might be from mounting ballasts (or fire suppression system) at one time. The floorpan of my car has many holes too, due to the same reasons.

Just think of the forces in high speed accident on 200 pounds of chair/seatbelt/person. Make sure that stuff is SUPER ridiculous secure.

I got the damn light out, just the clips from the visor are preventing me from getting the rest out. Giving it more effort tomorrow. It's funny the tiniest things give the biggest headaches.
The harness/aftermarket seat all should be connected via drilled holes through the floor pan and you should really use 3" square plates on the bottom side of the floor plan for added strength. You should also use super high quality bolts/screws.

Yeah i'll figure it out tomorrow.

Nice FastLine shifter!!
I hope that it is indeed condensation. I hate to say, but I've experienced milky oil in the crankcase and on the top end in the past too-TWICE!! First time was when a head gasket went bad, and the second time was when a water jacket cracked (allowed water to get into the oil passage). Both times the engine ran fine.
To test the head gasket, pressurize the radiator/H20 system and see if pressure falls.
Also, get some dry ice on that sound deadening crap!!
Btw, more parts shipped

From what i have seen, it was only on the bridge and and valve cover. I looked deeper into the head beyond the cams and saw plain oil pooled. So i'm fairly certain it was just condensation that caused it. The car hasn't ran in a week and we had a drastic shift in climate. We were in the 30s now we're in the high 60s low 70s. My concrete floor in the garage i could have mistaken someone dumping a bucket of water on it!
Other than that dry ice will be my next stage. Soon as i can locate a place to purchase some up here in the boonies.

To be honest this is the first short shift kit i have installed in the EM1. I think they had a single bend short shifter in there, otherwise it was just OEM. I think i'll like it, however my friends all said that they hated it at first. I bought it solely for how high it sits. That way it's somewhat like my old EP3, in terms of how close it is to the steering wheel.
