Does a defective EGR valve affect the idling of a car?

My 98 Prelude timing belt tensioner broke loose while driving on interstate highway. My car was disabled so I had it towed and had the timing belt and all the parts replaced. Everything works fine except it dies at idle.So the idle was raised at twice the recommended idle speed at 1500 rpm. What do you think is the problem?

yes it does affect idling... I had the problem that my car would idle incredibly low so i blocked off the EGR... havent had the problem since.. good luck

if you block the egr it adds hp doesn't it?

if you block off a working egr valve does it affect you performance ? my buddy says yes that you lose hp ,but i say no that you gain slight hp 1-5. cause all it does is allow co2 to go back into the engine.

if the EGR gets stuck open thats whats causing your bad idling and yes is does create a little hp... nothing very noticeable!

Only if it is stuck. Otherwise, EGR usually operates at idle and cruise. Not really a power adder I thought.

my engein is throwing a code 12, egr valve, and it idles fine

thats probably cause your EGR broke while it was in the closed position!

did you ever think it may have jumped timing and bent a valve?

now my idling is going good right after i blocked the EGR

Code 12 is the lift circuit code. It means your egr valve isn't opening. All you need to do is remove it and clean the carbon and reinstall.

The EGR is only open at part throttle. It's purpose is to cool the combustion temps during the stoich conditions of closed loop operation. It is also beneficial for reducing NOx emmisions (during part throttle). It is closed during open loop. Blocking the EGR does not increase performance.
