Timing belt teeth stripped???

This past weekend my timing belt broke on my B18C5 engine...it sucks but that's life. Anyway, I was just curious, I counted a total of 22 teeth that were stripped from the belt. And they were all in a row. when we took off the belt, the stripped teeth were at the bottom.

What could have caused this? Water pump seizing? or just normal wear & tear..I've had this engine in my civic for ~3 yrs now..and I only drive it 5 months a year!

if the belt is too loose teeth will shear off.

It's a toothed belt, made out of rubber. Eventually the rubber dries out, and the belt will fail, one way or another.

but This has happened to me 2 times this season alone.

First time I thought it was due to the belt being too loose. The second time, the belt was tight

I am running cam gears that might not be the best option for me. I picked up a set of Full-Race cam gears recently. Im gonna put them on with the new belt

are you useing a stock replacement timeing belt ? if so mabee try to upgrade to a gates racing belt or a toda belt they are supposed to be much stronger then oem and replacements. but yes as said before they are made out of rubber but usually are supposed to last around 70k miles. but i have seen some go over 100 120k

I put my new belt on and new Full Race cam gears.

I think my timing is off now..
