New starter grinding On the Flywheel
 

Okay I've just helped my friend install a new starter in his 93 Prelude, we thought it was the starter but ended up being the battery, so we kept the starter. The problem is now the starter grinds when we start the car. It does it for at least 2 seconds then stops. My question is should we replace the starter, with the starter it originally had, or is it safe to let it grind everytime the motor starts, and you can give me any other advice to fix the problem. By the way I do not know what flywheel he has installed, since he just bought the car. Any help would be appreciated.

The ring gear on the flywheel might have moved. Try inspecting it through the hole between the tranny and the block... it's a small rectangular plug.

if it's moved, is it possible to fix it without tearing out the tranny?

A couple things:
Take the starter out and very carefully compare the teeth to the old starter.

Unless you're positive you bought the right starter, take it to another store and compare it to another starter for the same car.

And like you said, the flywheel is suspect... but since the old starter worked you know at least those teeth match.... so compare the old and new starter before ripping the engine apart.

i actually examined it before installing. I notice they were different before I installed the new starter. The new one sticks out a little bit more than the old. Thanks for the advice everyone.

Replace the starter w/ the original one, take the new one back to the store for a refund, and don't mess with it anymore.
