CEL??? Manufacturer Control Ignition System or Misfire
 

My buddy has a '98 Civic EX. He had a CEL. I used my scanner and we got Manufacturer Control Ignition System or Misfire. Any ideas? Does it just need a tune up, i.e. dist cap, rotor, wires, plugs? And if so, what gap on the plugs?

It could be. Need a bit more info than that though.

Any symptoms associated with this?

Done any mods lately?

When did this happen?

Have you cleared the ecm memory and took it out for a test ride to see if it came back?

How about engine temperature. Is it higher than normal?

How is the idle?

Which cylinder is it misfiring from?

As for spark plug gap, should be written inside the engine bay, near the radiator.

i dont think he has done any mods recently... it just happened he said... i cleared the code and it came back on as he drove down the road.. well he said the CEL came back on after he left... so it probably is the same one.. ill ask him the rest.. it seesm to idle fine.. and it didnt say what cylinder misfired b/c it said "Manufacturer Control Ignition System OR Misfire"

missing something here. Since it is a 1998, it should be equipped with ODBII diagnostics. What p code was set?

my car did the same shit. i fixed it for a little bit by lowering the fuel pressure but then it came back. i have no idea. i have new plugs, rotor, cap wires and it still does it.
