what if you remove the thermostat entirely

i have no clue what would happen with that. but i dont think it would be a good idea. i think if u did that it would run way too cool. with the heat of the combustion chamber absorbing into the sleeves it could result in a cracked sleeve. not 100%positive about that but sounds like a possibility. anyone car to put any imput on the comment of running no thermostat at all?

i did it on my old toyota in hs...nothing happend

it was a good temporary fix till the water pump took a shit

Man my car was overheating out of the blue but now that i have this info i kno what to do to fix it.Did you add this link to toms post?

Removing the thermostat won't cause any damage to anything. I've been doing it for years in vehicles that run too hot even with the addition of an aftermarket radiator and special fluids. The thermostat is there to ensure proper warm-up in cold conditions. If you live somewhere where it's super cold for most of the year, you should leave it in to avoid damaging your car. If you live in the lower US of A, you can get away with never running one. If you road race or autocross, I highly suggest this thermostat-ectomy in the on-season to keep your car running as cool as you can.

If I've done it with a big block 500hp vette and more than my share of Hondas, you shouldn't have any reservations about removing it if you're having problems with overheating or running hot.

Wont hurt anything. Like Archdictus said the thermostat is just there to help your car reach normal operating temp faster. Basically without the thermostat it will just take a little longer to reach operating temperature. Not a big deal at all unless it's winter and your freezing your ass off waiting for some heat out of the vents. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

nice write up!!! very useful infomation..just like CEL...which in fact help me out...but still cant pin point the problem....never change thermostat before but if i do, ill know where to go...

completely removing the thermostat is not a good thing. the water will run through the housing too quickly and not allow the heat in the block to transfer to the coolant.

you can always put a "restrictor plate" in place of the thermostat (dead thermostat with centre cut out), but IMO don't just pull the thermo out and put it back together.

???

run dry? the cooling system is always full unless:

-you dont have antifreez and just plain water, it will boil out into the overflow bottle
-you have a leak. hole in RAD or dying water pump.

yes its easier on the pump woth NO restriction, but harder on your motor, heat-wise

I don't know if anyone else mentioned this but better safe than sorry...

boil a pot of water and drop the thermostat in to make sure that it'll open when you put it into your car to make sure you don't mis-diagnose your problem.

Also, try to buy the honda one, aftermarket ones seem to have more problems is what I heard.

Running w/o a thermostat will not harm your engine. The worst it'll do is cause your motor not to warm up depening on where you are located, and if at all take a long ass time to warm up.

I'd only recommend to those who live in hot ass areas or do road racing. I also have a trick I do when I road race, I'll take a pic of it later.

Not True. IF you are idling in hot weather (aka FL) the coolant/water will rush though the radiator too fast for it to be cooled. Your car will overheat if it idles for a long period of time without a thermostat (depends on the cooling system too, AKA if you have a good system, it will take long to over heat BUT it will overheat).
