Accord Idle Surging

I've done searches and have not seen any real possible answers - Most surging seems to be connected a/c, cold engine etc...

Here's the deal - For about a month now, car would surge from 1k to 2k until warmed up and then idle would settle down to normal. NOW, it doesn't matter if car is cold, warm, a/c on or not - it now surges from 1K to 2.5k constantly.

No changes have been made to engine, no recent work done, etc... Car is completely stock '90 Accord 5-spd.

Ideas? http://images.honda-tech.com/set1//smile/emcrook.gif

do a routine maintenance

from the books it says for erratic idle:
vacuum leakage.
leaking egr vavle.
air filter clogged.
fuel pump not delivering properly.
leaking head gasket.
timing belt/pulleys worn.
camshaft lobes worn.

High idle = surge. The ECU will try to correct the high idle and that is why the RPM's bounce from 1K to 2K.

Check your coolant level. If the coolant temp sensor is in an air pocket, you'll have a surge.

Do a search on IAC valve and fast idle thermo valve. Either valve can cause a high idle problem. Make sure your base idle is adjusted properly.

I posted a Honda service news a few months ago. It's for an idle fluctuation ('90-'93 Accord).

Funny. This idling or "hunting" problem just happened for the first time? today. Went away mysteriously.
Guess I should do a once over on everything huh?
Fluid levels, hoses, belts, plugs, etc.
Let me know what problem you come up with for your car.

Thanks for the help - Yesterday I took the cover off the Fast Idle Valve - Engine completely warmed up - I can see water in radiator - I wonder in the valve is leaking or not completely seating. When I press down the valve "plunger" and cover and seal the hole with my thumb, idle corrects instantly.

Does this mean that this valve is toast? I don't know enough about the valve to know - seems likel if it's warm then it shouldn't be letting air move through?

im not familiar with the valve, but if it corrects itself after you cover it, then i think you found your problem! https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

From what I understand - If engine is at operating temp - and coolant is flowing and warm - the valve should rise and seal hole obove plunger. With my car warm, coolant flowing - this valve should seat and not allow air to flow - I'll let you know if this is it...

Thanks again for the help everybody - Wacked out kid totalled my MB E320 last summer so back to driving 'Ole Faithful - '90 Accord with 190K miles. I just found this forum - very slick. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif
