How to remove cam gears?

IS there a way to remove the cam gears off of the cams when they are not in the head?

just go to http://www.c-speedracing.com find out its just like swapping cam all the procedures that involved ....and you don't have to take off the head........

you can do it that way unless u had a nice air gun set at TDC loosen the timing belt tensioner, pop off hte valve cover and take off the bolt holdin the cam gear then the safety keeper out slowly makesure u don't drop it into the timing bottom cover or you will be fucked.......then just reverse that and torque to specs.........

to remove cam gears, make sure your #1 cyl is top dead center(reason for this) 12mm wrench on the bolt and lossen...make sure you get the woodruff key its small so dont lose it. i hope your ready because do a timing belt install because you will have to redo the timing belt, because you will be removing it from the gears thats why you want to make sure its top dead center..i went through this headache when i changed mine because you WILL move the cams when you take off the belt because there is a load on the cam when its TDC and when you take off the belt the cams will move... just my info from someone who done it

to loosen the 12mm bolt on the cam gear, I use a peice of paper, undo the camshaft bearing cap nearest the cam gear, put the peice of paper between the bearing cap and camshaft, bolt down the bearing cap then undo the bolt holding the cam gear in place. REMEMBER to remove the peice of paper when your done. Other wise you'll be in for a surprise. With that said it's always best to verify your work 2x's or even 3x's over.

so in order for me ot take them off i would have to put them back on a assembled head? no way i can have something that cna jus torque it loose or a tool that locks it in place while unbolting the 12 mm?

You can try to holding it inplace the and use an impact, however I'd suggest to retorque when it's on the head though.

There are cam gear place holder tools, but they're expensive as hell from Matco or Snapon. I haven't found a reasonably priced one yet.

Instead, I just got an electric impact wrench for jobs away from the garage where I don't have a compressor.

They're 14mm bolts.

You should go back and check.

And, you can torque down the cam gear bolts after you tension the belt.
