First time install of accord starter...
 

hey guys. i'm helping a friend put in a starter on her accord. i'm doing this because A) she's hot B) she's buying me lunch...AND C) she's buying me a couple cases of beer (mmm, free beer).

anyways, i've never put in a starter before. i have mechanical experience, and from what i've researched, it doesn't look hard. are there any tips you wanna share? what's the deal with starter shims? do i need them?

any special tools besides a tourque wrench?

-95 accord, don't know what model

If it's anything like the 92, it's extremely easy.

A) Remove wires from starter (I had to peel back a dust boot for one I believe). Disconnect the battery first btw for good measure.
B) Remove the two bolts holding on the starter.
C) Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the bolts back to spec.

I didn't need any shims, it may depend on the brand of starter you get.

update:

-after giving the top starter bolt hell for an hour, i made a new best friend...liquid wrench.
-couldn't get the bottom bolt off with a normal combination wrench. need a 14mm socket i believe.
-found out that the rachet i need was missing (thanks to friends for using my tools and not putting them back https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif )
-ran out of time (she had to go to work)

well it's an easy process, but due to myself not having the tools and time constraints...it wasn't done. looks like next week i'll do it.

That bottom bolt is a biaaatch, its kind of a tight squeeze working under there. We had to wiggle an impact wrench from under the car to get it off.

Well, I had a 1/2" breaker bar and a whole socket set, so yeah, it was easy with those https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

If I remember right, I think I got the bottom bolt easily on my 92. Maybe the 5th gens have it at a bad angle.

the biggest prob is space, esp if you need to use a breaker bar to break the things loose. Otherwise its pretty straightforward.

it was pretty easy, i did it a few weeks ago on my 97. the top bolt is a 14mm. i had to borrow one from my neighbor because i lost my 14 a while back ( i need to get a new one lol). and the bottom is a 17mm but its hard to get to. i used an extension on my socket wrench and finagled it in there and finally got it off. as for the wires, theres only two. and of course like everyone else said, installation is reverse of removal. it took me a grand total of like 5-10 minutes (after i borrowed the 14 mm)

**edit** i had to rig up a cheaters bar to put on the end of the socket to get the top on loose since i didn't have access to a breaker bar (my friend was at work and they took the keypad off their garage door DOH!)
