I have one symptom for you. When you put the car in reverse at about ten mph and the engine slightly lifts out of the compartment pulling your stick down and forcing it into 5th gear. That was my past experience.

I'm assuming that you have an Accord 90 - 93, right?
if so, check your front engine mount. it often called,"the dog bone mount."

But to anwser your question, these are the symptoms of bad motor mounts:
1) harush shifting(A/T)
2) rough idle(but rpm okay)
3) noise when shifting into gears
4) noise when accelerating from a stop

look at the ones that are readily visible. are there any cracks or tears? my guess would be that this is the easiest way to find out if they are bad, granted they could be visibly okay but messed up, but it's an easy start, isn't it?

Look at the side mounts for the tranny and motor side and see if the bushings look cracked (or in some case gone https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif ) and the same for the rear. You can also push on the motor towards the back or sides to see if there is excessive movement.

Some people say that with a bad rear mount you can get a grind in the transmission between shifts under load. This is from the motor dipping due to bad mounts.

i had two bad, all the way torn motor mounts on the driver side upper and lower. my car shook bad at idle, and when i went to take off from a stop you could hear the lower mount bolt hit the framing of the car... it was not pretty. now that i replaced them and the car is smooth running. but on mine when they were broke or torn you could visibly see that they were bad, so just look at all your mounts. gloria

I assume most of you have manuals but I have a question about motor mounts when it comes to autos...

For a while now, my auto shifts kinda weird...here are my symptoms, I'm thinking(hoping) its only a motor mount
- downshifting is very pronounced, unlike any auto i have ever ridden in, very noticable and i can actually watch the tach and see it jump up 500 or so rpms when i am braking(tranny downshifting)
- from a stop, it almost seems like the car is "spooling" up for a brief moment, then catches, but not harshly and goes(weird?)
- i also hear high pitched noises sometimes and some likes the tranny is slipping but i know its not, just sounds like it

any help would be appreciated...and if i took it in to the dealer, would they be able to do a visual inspection to spot a bad mount???
