****What happens of you put too much oil into your motor?

Well this is for my D16. I think i put too much oil in it yesterday.
I change the oil last month and used about 4.25quarts. Somtimes my oil pan bolt drips oil too. Yesterday night i try to start the car and it starts up but sputter...then dies. And then the oil light comes on. So i put in about 1/2 a quart of more oil it.

****today after about 5miles if driving i notice that when I give it a little gas (1/2 of WOT) i see black smoke coming out. I'm not sure if it's black or blue, but when look at the exhust it sorta left a oily vapor inside the muffler.

--what do you think it wrong and can ove filling the oil mess up your motor(rings, valve seats, ect?)

Your oil light will come on any time your ignition is on and the motor isn't running, because the sensor is active, but the oil pump isn't moving. I'm not quite sure how bad it is to overfill your oil. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif

Re: ****What happens of you put too much oil into your motor? (Charlie Moua)

does it usually sputter and die? That would be the first thing i would investigate. However the oil light is only accurate when the engine is running!! I would do an oil change and start over. If you put to much oil in an engine you can mess up the seals (crank f+r) but not 1/2 quart to much.
Grayish Black smoke=too much fuel or unburned fuel in exhaust
Blue smoke=too much oil, bad rings, or bad valve seals.
white-coolant or water in combustion chamber usually Head gasket
your pcv valve may also have popped out because of too much oil.
that's all i can think of

Hey i have an EF too!

thanks guys. Well the oil light comes on when i try to crank it. It cranked but did not turn over until i filled it up with more oil.

sounds like you might have had another problem masked by the oil situation
any check engine lights????

YUP i also have a bad o2 sensor. thats about it.
It drives fine but it has spuddered and died on my 2 of the 8 starts in the past 2 days. i will fix my 02 sensor and go from there.

Be sure to change the oil too...

Well to answer you ?....the oil then hits the crank and froths over...then turning into a air/oil substance semi-white in color and when it goes through you motor and tried to coat you rings...well it just doesnt and cause you cylinder walls to be oiless and start shaving away at the cylinder walls causing premature wear.,..and eventually shortening you life span of the motor and the performance of you car.

you could have bad valve seals

Oil will just leak thru the piston rings and burn it off. I would suggest draining it to the proper level, however.

Let me tell you a story about this. A few years ago, my car was hit, and I took it into a shop to get the damage redone. While it was there, I had them change to oil and brakes, etc. I get the car back, it runs like ASS. And about 20 minutes down the road it starts blowing smoke EVERYWHERE. I mean you couldn't see through it. Had it towed to HONDA, they said there was 10 quarts of oil in the car. And that the guy who did the oil change didn't drain the oil, but simply added 5 more quarts. I ended having to spend 500 dollars to get all the damage fixed to my internals. The car never has ran quite right since that happened. I did get my money out of the shop though. Those bastards didn't want to pay at first.

DO NOT over-fill your oil, for your cars sake, and your wallets sake. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

thanks guys.
*so what is the max for a D16? ...4.25 or 4.50 quarts?
*also does having too much oil effect how the car idles or starts up?

Re: (Charlie Moua)

It will foam like someone stated above, could cause premature ring wear.

It's not good, but doing it once and only slightly overfilling is ok.

I just noticed that in my helms (for a b18c5) it says 4 quarts of oil INCLUDING the oil filter (and the oil you put in there), 4.x (I can't remember the exactly amount, hence the x) for a complete overhaul/rebuild.
