symptoms of cam timing being off?
 

What exactly would the engine do if the cam timing was off by say, 1 tooth on the timing belt? Specifically, if the crank is at TDC and the cam is forward (advanced) by 1 tooth past TDC, how would the engine run and/or idle? Could that cause it to idle up and down? Would it cause a loss of power? I'm pretty sure the answers are yes and yes but I just want to make sure. TIA

still having problems huh? Dang.

It will run poorly and the ignition will be 7-9 degrees advanced as well.

Are you having troubles keeping the cam inline with the crank when you rotate the engine??? AIM me later at "illmaticdc"...or "yep you're gay" on MSN.

Sometimes, when you slip a tooth on the belt the car will be occasionally hard to start or not start at all. Does the belt keep slipping? Have you tried checking out your tensioner? Usually when the belt slips a tooth it can result in bent valves or such, where your Idle would flutuate. I would try to line it back up TDC and run a compression test to see if anything was damaged. Good luck and hopefully everything will get sorted out.

Well it's a 95 DX Civic, w/ a recently installed 97 D16Y8 engine. At first it was running the old D15 cam gear on it, which has the same number of teeth as the Y8 cam gear, but the keyway is slightly off. So the Y8 cam gear was installed, but the cam was not turned at all during the install, so the camshaft remained in the same spot as it was before with the D15 cam gear. That's why I think the camshaft was off by a tooth. When the crankshaft was set to TDC, the UP marker on the camshaft pointed slightly forward, instead of straight up. http://images.honda-tech.com/set1//smile/emcrook.gif
