My 1993 honda accord won't shift out of park

My 1993 Honda accord, 10th edition recently ran into a situation known as "cranking but no start". After few weeks of working on it with the help from many of you, the car was back to life again as of today 8pm. However, the joy was short because I learned that I could not shift the car out of park while the engine was on and no brake lights on either. I could use another spare key to unlock the the shifter and drove the car.

I did continuity check on the brake light switch, and it worked ok. the Haynes manual did not have the testing instruction for the switch for car with cruise control option but I made a logical guess to go through the test. The switch had 4 terminals (spade) and it arranged with two set of "normally closed" and "normally open" and they open and closed as pressing or releasing the switch plunger. I used the ohm meter to check the switch changing its state. I googled about this issue, and many people advised to replace the switch but the test seems convincing that the unit is ok (?)

Anyhow, I can check the brake light bulb condition (RR & RL) tomorrow but please advise where I can find fuses for brake light & shifter solenoid, and how do I go from here.

Thanks.

Not sure if it's the same on the 93's but my 96 accord had that happen and it turned out to be one of the fuses for the back up lights/turn signals. You have to figure if anything that compromises safe driving the ECU is going to stop you from getting out of park. ie. brake lights, turn signals, etc. I would check the interior fuse box for any blown ones.

Thanks for your input. Here is the update:
All fused (underhood/interior) are good.
All light bulbs RR/RL are all good.
replaced brake switch as well.
Verified interlock solenoid actuation by applying 12VDC directly.

Still can't shift out of park & All rear lights are not on while applying brake in park. Anything else do I need to check? Please help!

What is the voltage to the WHT/YEL wire on the brake light switch?

Re: My 1993 honda accord won't shift out of park

Brake light switch connector has 4 wires:
(1) Grey
(2) Yel ----> manual said "fuse #25 U/H F/B" Any Ideas where that is?
(3) Green
(4) Light green

V=0VDC b/t yellow and grey either key is off or at "on" position.

Where do I pick up the ground point? Anyway, I use the jump cable to connect GND from battery.

when no key in the car: Voltage=0 when Black Probe connected to Battery GND & red probe is in (1) or (2) or (3) or (4)

When key is at "on" position: Black Probe connected to Battery GND, then V=12.2vdc at (4) "light green", V=0 at (3) or (1) or (2).

"U/H F/B" should be under hood fuse box

That was what I guess and the trouble is, I pull every single one out and all fuses are ok! Is there any relay somewhere in b/t to pass down the power supply?

In your testing - was the brake pedal pushed when the key was on?

Re: My 1993 honda accord won't shift out of park

Thanks for staying with me on this issue "Mr. Lost Again". I found the bad fuse that's responsible for my mysteries. Fuse#25 = Stop Horn (20A/Horn relay/left horn/brake sw/key Int sw) next to Hazard light fuse. Why they call it "Stop Horn"? Anyhow, I Changed it and the problem went away…Hooray! Thanks again.

That was the fuse I was worried about. Glad you got it :)
