No power when pressing gas pedal
Hello,
My brother is having problems with his 96 Civic. It's an automatic. When he steps on the gas nothing happens. At first we thought it was something to do with the transmission. We checked the fluid level but it was fine, but we went and put fresh transmission fluid in anyways. It's still happening. Could it be a problem with fuel injectors or somehow something wrong with the throttle body/throttle cable? I don't know much about that generation Civic or about D series engines or auto transmissions. We're just trying to get an idea of what some likely culprits could be for when we take it to the garage. Thanks. |
Re: No power when pressing gas pedal
Oh, and I don't know about other people, but the search function isn't working for me regardless of what I type in, it keeps saying 0 results. Just wanted to get that out of the way before anyone yells at me about it.

Re: No power when pressing gas pedal
Will it rev in neutral? If it does, will it rev in D? If it does, but thhe car doesn't move, will it move in D3 or 2?

Re: No power when pressing gas pedal
I'm not sure, he isn't home now but I will ask him. Today we pulled out of a parking lot from a stop and it went forward a little but then suddenly there was no power. It didn't stall or flutter or anything, there was just no acceleration. Then after pressing the gas a few more times, finally it moved again.

I'm not sure exactly, it's getting up there. It is 17 years old afterall. It's probably around 200k.

Re: No power when pressing gas pedal
According to my Google research it could be an O2 sensor or the TPS. Any other ideas?

Re: No power when pressing gas pedal
Maybe the trottle cable is loose?

Re: No power when pressing gas pedal
Google told me the problem is you have a stock Honda. . . none of them go anywhere when you press the gas pedal . . . jokes

Re: No power when pressing gas pedal
post a video or be a LOT more descriptive of the problem.
Two nights I was at a gas station and lady was asking people if they could jump starter her gm suv. I asked if she had AAA. She said she did not. Since I lived close by I offered to go my house and get my cables. 20 minutes later I jump start her truck and if fires right up. About 30 seconds later it dies. Turns out her truck was doing that from the beginning. She never needed a jump start, turns out her fuel pump was going out. hahaha. That is what I get for assuming she knew she needed a jump start. Now back to you. WHAT EXACTLY do you mean "No power when pressing gas pedal"? About two months ago my customer said they wanted a service on their Mercedes SUV and wanted to check out the lack of power on their truck. Since the brake light sensor was on we thought maybe it was in limb mode. Turns out all it was the FLOOR MAT stuck under the gas pedal. |
Re: No power when pressing gas pedal
people who go onto honda websites to hate on hondas need to find something better to do like pretend they have a life.

Re: No power when pressing gas pedal
Leave it to Honda Tech to NOT be helpful at all. How much more descriptive can I be? Press gas pedal = car does not accelerate. As for the people saying that it's because he drives a Honda... you actually signed up for a Honda website to say this stuff?

Re: No power when pressing gas pedal
I tried to help you. I gave you three simple questions, and you still have yet to answer them. You can be an indignant ass after you help the people who are trying to help you.

Several people myself included tried to help and offer you suggestions. Your description of the problem could be a million things. I don't know what you consider no power means. I told you two true stories that happen in the past few months. Both people's idea of what was wrong with their car is not how a mechanic would have fixed their car. Did you check the floor mat or the loose throttle cable? Both would give your exact symptoms. |

Re: No power when pressing gas pedal
fuel filter?
|
Re: No power when pressing gas pedal
Could be a clogged catalytic converter, bad 02 sensors, or a bad torque converter.
Is the CEL on? |
Re: No power when pressing gas pedal
Throttle cable loose ? equivalent to "clutch slip" in an auto ???(what ever it's called)

Re: No power when pressing gas pedal
Tranny going out? Torque converter!
Does the rpm's on the motor go up when you press the gas pedal? |

Re: No power when pressing gas pedal
I'll show you descriptive:
A previous problem my 94 Civic EX had was that it had no power when pressing the gas pedal. From a complete stop I would go into first gear and in order to get moving I would have to floor it. The car would not accelerate for maybe two seconds before the RPM increased and the car started accelerating like normal. I would sometimes rev the engine in neutral and slip the clutch in order to get going. Turned out my engine timing was way off. That's how you frakkin' describe a possible "No power when pressing gas pedal" problem. So when you press the gas and the car doesn't accelerate, what are you doing? Is the pedal to the floor? Are you slightly pressing the pedal like you would in a car with no problems? What do you mean by "not accelerating"? Is the car staying at a steady speed of 0 or 1mph or is it increasing in speed but at a slow rate? What is the engine doing? Is the RPM increasing? Does the engine get loud? It's annoying reading so many posts by people with poor grammar, bad spelling, or just otherwise can't get their damn point across. I see the same shit in papers written by college students. |
Re: No power when pressing gas pedal
see if the axel came out the tranny this happened to me about a month ago after i did a swap but its worth a try atleast
