1994 Honda Accord keeps dying
I have a 1994 Honda Accord with 295,000 miles of which 255,000 of the miles I put on the car. Current I am having problems with the car dying while driving. Once the car dies it does not start right back up. I have popping the clutch several times while the car is still moving with no luck. Once stopped if you sit for about a minute or more the car will start right back up. If you do not wait for a short time (minute) it will not start up. The problem of the car dying has gotten worse and has died several times while out on a short drive (5 miles or less). However, sometimes the care runs just fine and doesn’t die at all. I question if the catalytic converter is plugging up again but I don’t see how this would cause this problem. *
Recently I have performed the following work. Replaced the distributor (Non OEM from Rock Auto most expensive one) Replaced plug wires (OEM) Replaced plugs (NGK) Replaced Master Fuel Relay (OEM) Replace VTECH solenoid (OEM) * I really want to drive this car for another 100 or 200k miles but it need to be dependable. * Any idea or input on my problem? Thanks Jason H. |
Re: 1994 Honda Accord keeps dying
is it throwing a cel ? if so codes would be helpful

Re: 1994 Honda Accord keeps dying
The check engine light is currently on but when you check the codes (via a paper clip) it only throws a code for ABS via the ABS light. The check engine light does not throw any codes.

Sounds like the ignition module to me. A friend of mine had the same problem with his 71 courier. Just because it's a new part doesn't mean it's a good part.

do you hear the fuel pump kicking on ? have you checked fuel pressure ? the situation seems weird. so when it dies you have to let it sit for a minute then itll restart ? but if its longer than a certain amount of time then it doesnt ? has the car overheated? have you checked coolant ? seems like once it gets warmed up it is when your having the problem
have you checked fuel pressure ? No I have not so when it dies you have to let it sit for a minute then itll restart ? Yes if you try to start it right back up all it will do is turn over. but if its longer than a certain amount of time then it doesnt ? That is correct it starts right back up. has the car overheated? The car has never overheated. have you checked coolant ? Yes Tseems like once it gets warmed up it is when your having the problem? That is not a true statment b/c it has happened when the motor was still cold and had only ran for about 3 to 5 minutes. |

Posted from Honda-tech.com App for Android The problem did existed before the distributor but not near as bad. |
Re: 1994 Honda Accord keeps dying
There aren't seperate connectors for the ABS and the CEL?? I thought there was, because I've jumped my ABS connector to get codes, and the ABS light flashed as it should. But yeah I thought there was a seperate connector you jump to retrieve CEL codes....?

Yes its in the dizzy. If you replaced the entire dizzy and its still doing it, even worse now, might be your coil pack.

Re: 1994 Honda Accord keeps dying
The main thing you haven't replaced that it could be is your ignition switch.

Re: 1994 Honda Accord keeps dying
Let me say thanks for all the ideas and please keep them coming because I want to keep this thing running. However, when this car started dying on me I had to have transportation for work and the wife hates driving my truck so we went out and bought a new 2013 Honda Accord Sport. I would much rather drive the 1994 Honda Accord than my 1999 Chevy truck on a regular bases b/c I have always enjoyed this car. Also over the past several months I have redone the whole front end just for maintenance reasons. So if you add up the cost of all the parts that I have put into this car over the past 4 months it is well over $1000.00 dollars. That being said I don't want to just start throwing more parts at the car and next think you know I have put $2000.00 or more into the car over the last several months. I have owned the car for 13 years and it has gone way beyond my original mileage expectation of 100,000 or 200,000 but of course I keep raising the bar. Heck I even have a co-worker that has put 430,000 on one Honda and 525,000 on another over the years so I am truly inspired by others on the mileage.

Re: 1994 Honda Accord keeps dying
If it was a Honda ignition switch then that's not your problem. You should replace your oxygen sensor before giving up completely. It's a $35 dollar part at rockauto..get only Denso if you do. Also, you should post a pic of all four of your spark plugs...the tips. They can give an indication if you got one sticking open or if you're running rich or something. Do that if you can. You can upload to photobucket and link to the pic.

Re: 1994 Honda Accord keeps dying
Those things are charcoaled up. You might have an exhaust leak. You should do a seafoam and have someone check for an exhaust leak(via white smoke leaking out) somewhere from the exhaust manifold(where it meets the head) all the way down to the oxygen sensor. Please be careful seafoaming...do not let the car stall while you're seafoaming. If you're not familiar with how to seafoam you should have a shop do it.

Re: 1994 Honda Accord keeps dying
Dorman sells new ones....or might find someone else.
Bone yard for a used one. IMHO, if the manifold cracked...let me guess where #1 and #2 cyl's come togther. Check the mounts and the little bracket on the drivers/left side of the manifold.....block to exh manifold. Now to the issue of the car stopping....leave the plugs and manifold out. When it does this, can you do some tests with a volt meter/test light. My guess at this point.....main relay, ign switch- elec part, ICM or coil. |
Re: 1994 Honda Accord keeps dying
IMHO it sounds like its your pick up coil that's going bad. I was having the same issue and I rebuilt my dizzy today the car runs just fine. It hasn't stalled, hesitated or anything. You might want to check into that while you're at it. :drag:

Re: 1994 Honda Accord keeps dying
After you fix the leak you will need a new oxygen sensor. Get only a Denso brand from rockauto.com This might fix your stalling problem too.

Re: 1994 Honda Accord keeps dying
It turns out that NvBiker1 had a exhaust manifold laying around so I am going to purchase it from him. Hopefully this and an O2 sensor will help me out.

Re: 1994 Honda Accord keeps dying
Glad to help

Re: 1994 Honda Accord keeps dying
IMHO - A cracked manifold and a bad/suspect O2 are not causing the car to die while driving down the road.
