2001 civic timing after broken belt
 

hi all,

i need to know after the timing belt has broken on a 2001 civic, do i only need to align both cam and crank pulleys with the mark. Or is there a number of turns to respect to know if the cam and crankshafts are at (TDC) top dead center? When the crank pulley is aligned with the mark, will the no 1 piston (cylinder) be a TDC? Is it the same with the cam shaft pulley? When the marks are aligned, will the cam shaft be at the right timing for sure. Since engine is a 4 stroke, does this make a difference on the number of turn on the cam shaft and the crankshaft and the timing? I'm a bit confused with that. When the belt isn't broken, the engine is not out of timing but after it break, what needs to be done?:(

There should be markings on the crank pulley, as well as the cam gear, for TDC. Both need to be at TDC, when installing the timing belt. No matter how many times you rotate either the cam or the crank, as long as they end up at TDC, it will always be the same (remember the crank and cam only can rotate 360 degrees).

Did you inspect your combustion chamber for any damage? Because the D17 is an interference engine. If the belt snapped during engine operation, you probably have valve and/or piston damage.

hi, no i never inspect the head yet, it happened last night. Will see today.
I tought since belt has broken i need to align the mark on the crank but also to make sure it's align with the no 1 piston at TDC when the piston is up at firing time. So to have the piston at TDC at firing time, I may need the engine to do 2 turns? I read that No1 piston has to be up. If i only care about mark on the crank, why would i care for piston one to be up?

So what happened to the car... was there any damageÉ The reason I ask is that my son has a `93 with 250 000 km on it. The belt was changed at 110 000 km about eight years ago. The car was purchased for $500. so I don`t want to put the same amount in to a timing belt. If there was no damage on your car, maybe I will wait until it breaks before replacing.

You will notice that the engine turns over really easy as there won't be _ANY_ compression as the bent valves will be stuck open. It will be cheaper to find a used head than to rebuild the head you have, replacement valves are EXPENSIVE. Willing to bet there are around 8 of them bent. Mine snapped a belt when the cam sensor freed itself from the head. New belt, tensioner, water pump, machine shop bill, cam gear and plastic cam gear cover came out to around 600 bucks.

I have this happend to me on my passat and was lucky to not have any pistons bad... I did replace the head... If I was in this situation, I would look for another engine or head....

Hi

i finally had the head valves broken so i decided to replace the engine completely. Here we have a garage that is called Japan Motor Import. They replaced my engine with a used japan engine imported from Japan. There was 80,000Km on it. Had it done for 950$ CDN. Everything is back to normal now.
