ordering replacement timing belt parts for 1997 accord
 

1997 Accord Special edition, 4 cylinder auto. 77,400, don't know if or when timing belt has been replaced.
I mentioned replacing timing belt in my first thread but have more questions so starting new so everyone doesn't have to scroll thru all that.

Monday I will start calling some reputable mechanics to get labor estimate, timing belt and water pump. My question is, is it worth it to order my parts and bring them to the mechanic? That way I know they're good parts too. And, should I replace tensioner too?

I can get the following for $295:

Without tensioner and springs its $205.

Also feel free to state what you think good cost for labor would be.

Mechanics I know of recommend NAPA autoparts since they are fine quality parts.

$295 is a lot of money! I bet you found it on Ebay from seller dch.honda.of.lemon.grove.

-OEM Timing, balancer belt and tensioners Gates TCK186 - $61.57 free shipping

-OEM Water pump from Honda or online dealers - $50.00

-The seals can be had for 3-5 buxs each. I have used OEM seals (NOK, AKAI, etc.) or would get either Fel-Pro from AutoZone, Advance Auto, Napa, etc. I have used those seals and Honda OEM seals w/o any issues or leaks.

-The Alternator and PS belt can be tricky. I have used Napa belts with no problems or squeaks.

- You don't need the springs. I have changed F22b1 and b2 series engines over 10 times and never had a problem with the springs.

- Don't forget a "balance shaft seal retainer" if you car doesn't have one.

Total should be about $150.00

Well I found a timing belt component kit TCK186 for $61.57 on amazon, but it doesn't give a good description. (how can you tell its oem?) Is that the one you're referencing?

It says "brand name." Brands such as GMB and Flennor. Is this good, or is it a low budget low quality kit that people warn against? Belts, water pump, tensioners all for $110.25.

*EDIT: Well I might have answered my own question there. Not sure I'd trust Flennor. Might stick with Gates like djkurious suggested.

Two things i have to say, prices are all over the place on these parts, but im telling you right now the qulity is not the same, Buy honda parts only especially the timeing belt and water pump, i have been there and know that. on my 92 the timing belt broke after 45000 miles, it was a gates, the water pump failed at 60 k miles also a gates. lucky i didnt blow up the engine as it stopped in the correct place. its good to save money but if you like your car , this is NOT the place to do it. id use honda parts no matter what the total cost. also if this car is automatic use only honda oil, NO additives and no flushing, powerer steering oil the same thing. they are great little cars and you have a very good model. its up to you. i put lube guard in my transmission and the next day it laid down. Thanks for the input frank, and that brings up ANOTHER question... I've read a few forum discussions where it was mentioned that Gates IS what you get when you buy a honda oem timing belt. Is or was that ever true?

yes it is true, Gates is the oem manufacture.. Honda dosent make belts them self they just put there name and number on it and a redish/pinkish bag. I use Napa water pumps and never once had an issue. I would only buy Gates belts, you can get them cheap at rockauto.com

I have seen honda selling gatesbbelts, however not all do, and gates does not make theire belts. it is a CHEAP replacement. do as you will, only giving advice as a honda owner for years. and ive had plenty of trouble with gates parts, and if you look at a genuine honda timeing belt and cant tell the difference from a gates then there is a real problem. i sure can. but again its your car, gates is a good water pump if you dont mind replacing it every 40 to 60 k miles and you dont mind the often added noise they produce.

Go to majestic website, or any honda website and find the timing belt and balancer belt. Next to it you will see (Unitta). That is the manufacter of the belts. Google Unitta and see what comes up and share with the board who makes the belts....

So I can go to amazon here: Amazon gates timing belt and water pump Getting that all for $86 shipped. How can I tell if that's legit? It's confusing shopping for parts for sure. Might end up getting mechanic supplied parts.

I heard here that RockAuto is reputable, and found this: AISIN timing belt and water pump kit for about $138 shipped. The belt is Mitsuboshi, which I noticed was the brand of my serpentine belt.

The OEM suppliers Bando and Mitsuboshi are best for the A/C and power steering belt. Not sure if I would use them for timing and balancer belt. If someone can vouch for them, maybe that will persuade you. Otherwise, I would always go with OEM for the most important belts (Unitta aka Gates) for a piece of mind.

even my bud whos a Honda parts guy says there gates belts ... Gates makes alot of belts under diffrent names

majectic honda does provide a gates balancer belt, i no not why, i went to honda dealer here today to see whats what and on timeing belts they came up with a japanese mgf, they told me under no circumstances would they put there name on or pass off a gates product unless listed that way, but not with the hoda name, and gates water pumps are nothing but junk, i have had three put on my cars all failed early and i have one here still with the bearings all out of it. so beleive as you will, for me im done with anything that has to do with gates.

Check more dealerships than just your local one. Honda does not make the belts, Gates makes the timing and balancer belts for Honda. Honda doesn't make parts, just outsources the best company's to make it for them. Any one of the online dealers will say "Unitta" for the Honda OEM belts listed previously.

I'm in the middle of replacing belts and tensioners for 1997 Accord F22B2. I bought a Gates kit of timing/balancer belts and tensioners. Wish me luck. Also, I can't get that damn lower cover back on. Haynes manual suggests lowering the engine a few inches by taking off just the driver's side engine mount and lowering the engine with a jack. 1st - is that going to help? 2nd - will that hurt anything on the car like the other engine mounts or anything else connected to the engine? What's the best way for me to get the lower timing cover back on?

Remove left motor mount, put board under oil pan, lower the engine, will be fine, be careful to put the board in a place on pan where it wont damage pan. cover should go on fine.

What got me when I did the belt was the PS line that is mounted on the inside of the frame rail. Had to remove the two(?) bolts holding that line on so I could move it up enough for the lower cover to clear the rear tensioneer spring holder bolt on the B1.

Course I was doing this outside, in the rain, on a hill like a muppet. So your experience may differ.

damn i just had the timing belt service done on my 97 accord f22b1 and went with the gates kit. i asked around and no one at my shop had anything bad to say about their products. wish i had seen this before.

gates makes honda belts for them and they just put the Honda name on it so you will be fine
