Ticking noise when accelerating?

I have a 94 civic ex coupe and resonantly have an engine swap. It seems that when i accelerate i here a low tick tick tick tick. and it only happends when i accelerate. What could be the problem and i hope its not expensive i have put about 8k into fixing this car up and its really pissing me off sense everytime i get it back from the shop theres somthing else wrong.

Re: Ticking noise when accelerating?

valve adjustment
"go-no go feeler gauges"

Re: Ticking noise when accelerating?

Could be an exhaust manifold or exhaust leak.

I'd second that "valve adjustment". easy to do if you have the tools and a bit of know-how... and if you don't then I'd get some. tools and know-how.

I'm not sure what it was. But ever sense i replaced the stock intake manifold with a header the sound is gone but the engine was just put in while the ticking was happening. also the header made the car much louder so maybe im just ot hearing it anymore lmao

Make sure you have the right engine oil viscosity in there. Most likely it will be your valves that need adjustment.

Try to isolate the sound. For example, if it's on the engine directly under the valve cover ,grab a long screwdriver with a handle that you can put your ear on. Touch around the valve cover with the engine running and use the screwdrivers end as a sort of stethoscope to locate which valve is the problem. Grab a feeler gauge set and learn how to do it yourself.... or just go straight to a shop and have them do it for you (mention your engine is swapped and not stock)

It could be many other things.

Does it sound when you're in idle? try taking off the accessory belts one by one for idling no longer than a couple of minutes. Alternator, A/C, power steering belts one at a time, start with the power steering, then the a/c and then the alternator. Don't drive though.... just rev at idle.

If you only hear it when you're moving, it could be your transmission, suspension, or tires. or even brakes... or something simple as a dangling part.

could be your valves. if you can hear it from inside your car while you accelerate, i definitely think its time for a valve adjustment. Or it could be your injectors. b16's are notorious for loud ticking injectors. run some chemtool through it and see if that helps.

--- On the nose sir! Screwdriver, and just listen to different parts of the motor. You will CLEARLY hear the sound amplified.
