Octane has nothing to do with quantity of fuel. Octane is purely resistance to detonation. You'd need to either reduce the fuel amount sprayed or use a fuel that has a different ratio for stoich (like ethanol) to correct running rich.

Re: 07' Civic SI-What type of gas?

Shell V-Power 93 octane.
BP (Invigorate) 93 octane.
Mobil/Exxon 93 octane
Chevron (techron) 93 octane.

Basically any name brand gas station that sells 93 octane. My preferance is Shell.

I ran my 06 on regular fuel, the car got the same MPG and the power did feel about the same.

Any modern car will compensate for low octane fuel by retarding the timing when needed, so run what you afford, if you are going racing buy higher octane.

Reason why I only use shell gas stations.Good stuff

If you are saying that he should run low octane in his Si you are very wrong!

Running 87 or 89 octane on an engine that was tune and made to run 91 will cause a lot of damage! Yes you can debate the ECU will retard the timing for that one use but continue doing it and see what happens in the long run.

Also an engine designed to use premium fuel will have loss of power (HP) as well a decrease in mileage (MPG). This is all known facts that have been proven many times!

i wouldnt say WILL ruin your engine but very well could.. use premium tho. and YES YOU WILL GET BETTER MPG AND POWER ON PREMIUM!

87-89 octane wont kill your engine but it will gum up the works and there is really no point.. i ran regular a couple times in my prelude when i had it because i was low on money and thought it was cheaper.. it isnt, my gas gauge went down faster and my car ran like shit.. i had a loud exhaust system and you could tell i was running regular just by the sound.. it was quieter and didnt have near the snap that it did when running prem...

RUN PREMIUM DONT LISTEN TO THESE GUYS.. Regular is garbage and burns faster and isnt near as clean

Here in NY we get 93 Octane. I love Shell products. I use their gas and Penzoil motor oil. They are the same company. Quality products and reasonably priced.

You can't afford $5-$6 extra per fillup to put the right fuel in your car?

Re: 07' Civic SI-What type of gas?

Wow, you guys are paying $1.40/L for 91 in Sask??
We have stations everywhere in Alberta selling 94 octane for $1.20/L.

Maybe if you guys raped the Earth for oil like we did, you'd see better fuel for cheaper! haha :) Makes me wonder what gas is like in Texas ...

Re: 07' Civic SI-What type of gas?

pulled from the manual pg 180

SI model only
Your vehicle is designed to operate
on premium unleaded gasoline with a
pump octane number of 91 or higher
.
Use of a lower octane gasoline can
cause occasional metallic knocking
noises in the engine and will result in
decreased engine performance. Use
of a gasoline with a pump octane
number less than 87 can lead to
engine damage.

We recommend using quality
gasolines containing detergent
additives that help prevent fuel
system and engine deposits.
In addition, in order to maintain good
performance, fuel economy, and
emissions control, we strongly
recommend, in areas where it is
available, the use of gasoline that
does NOT contain manganese-based
fuel additives such as MMT.
Use of gasoline with these additives
may adversely affect performance,
and cause the malfunction indicator
lamp on your instrument panel to
come on. If this happens, contact
your authorized dealer for service.

pg 181

Some gasoline today is blended with
oxygenates such as ethanol or
MTBE. Your vehicle is designed to
operate on oxygenated gasoline
containing up to 10% ethanol by
volume and up to 15% MTBE by
volume. Do not use gasoline
containing methanol.

If you notice any undesirable
operating symptoms, try another
service station or switch to another
brand of gasoline.

On SI model
You may hear a knocking noise from
the engine if you drive the vehicle at
low engine speed (below about 1,000
rpm) in a higher gear. To stop this,
raise the engine speed by shifting to
a lower gear.

imo 89 is "emergency" fuel... like mentioned you can use it, but you get decreased engine performance (and who wants that?)

its down to about 1.30 right now but in the summer it was 1.50 or so at times.. and yeah it pretty bad gas prices are so high in canada cosidering thats where most of the oil comes from.. especially alberta. SASK NEEDS MORE RIGS!

how would it not damage the engine? 87 octane ignites too early... wow.

The ECU can try to compensate for using crappy gas by retarding ignition timing. I doubt it'd always be successful, though; over time, I'd expect some damage. I wouldn't ever use anything below premium. If you can't afford the proper gas, you can't afford the car.
