D16Y8 - Info about the VTEC?

I had my first ever autocross session this weekend. It was a great time.

For most cars at the track, once you're in 2nd, you stay there. One thing I noticed was that my car seemed to want to crawl out of the some of the tight corners, slow to accelerate until it reached higher RPMs. This may completely be my imagination, in the excitement.

There was another guy there who has a 96 EX coupe, stock engine, and I rode with him to get a feel. It seems like I could tell when his VTEC was kicking in. In the past, I've routinely brought my engine to red-line, but rarely over it, and I've never noticed a particular point when the VTEC is supposed to engage. Reading up on my engine, it seems the VTEC is supposed to engage around 5800 RPM. The guy with the coupe said it's supposed to kick in around 4500.

What's the correct RPM for engagement? Should I be listening for something specific? What should I check to see if there's a problem with my engine?

Re: D16Y8 - Info about the VTEC?

I found this thread from another site, which may contain some more info on my inquiry:

From reading that, it could be that my VTEC is actually tuned better than his. Or still not working at all.

Still interested in your opinions.
