95 accord 2.2 sohc vtec engine replacement

I am swapping the blown engine from my 95 accord, with an engine out of a 96 accord. The ebay junkyard informed me that this would fit a 94-96 only. What issues might i run into, and is it easier to pull just motor, or motor and trans together. Please help.

Re: 95 accord 2.2 sohc vtec engine replacement

If the engine is a F22B1 it will be mostly the same, but there are slight differences due to the '94/'95 being OBDI and the '96/'97 being OBDII. IIRC there are a few added sensors. AFAIK the long blocks are the same. There have been several posts on the interchange of the 94/95 and 96/97 engine. Search is your friend.

As for engine removal, you will have to remove the transmission as well.
The engine uses 3 of the 4 mounts. Leaving the transmission with only a single mount, it is not possible to leave the transmission in alone without some how supporting it AT, and probably not possible at all with an MT due to the input shaft and clutch interface with the engine.

For ease of removal I would remove the transmission first. This will give you more room to work on the engine removal/install. Also remove as much as you can from the engine while it is in car. It will make removal of the flywheel/driveplate and engine harmonic damper much easier than if it were out on the ground.

Thanks for the info on the engine removal. Very helpful. The engines are f22b1. The one in the car that is blown has a grey/silver valve cover, and the replacement that I have purchased has a black valve cover. About the swap, what sensors/extra parts will i have to include to make the swap successful?

AFAIK Honda painted Cam/Valve covers to readily identify them. I could be wrong, but from what I know, F22B1 with natural cam cover = 94/95, F22B1 with black cam cover = 96-98.

IIRC the later 96/97s have a crank position sensor, but you will not need it in the earlier 94/95 models.
There are a few posts on H-T with what the difference is and what you will or will not need. From what I can recall the heads are the same, its just a difference with a crank position sensor that you will not need. I don't recall as to why you cannot just strip both engines down to the long blocks and swap all the early parts onto the later engine.

Two sensors that I know of that are in different locations, not new, would be the Top dead Center (TDC) & Crank Position (CKP) sensors. The TDC & CKP sensors on the 96/97 OBD2 engine are mounted down on the oil pump housing behind the crank pulley. They require the use of the timing and balance belt drive gears to operate.

As mentioned above there are a few threads already about F22 OBD1 - F22 OBD2 swaps for the 5th gen Accords.

Im sorry if I am asking too much. But I am new to the import motor scene. I have no clue where sensors, and obd1-obd2 sensors would be located on the motor, and all. Basically what do i have to buy/change in order to make this swap work. any links-info would be greatly appreciated.

Use all of the parts from your current engine. I.E. Intake and exhaust manifolds, distributor, starter, alternator, power steering pump and A/C compressor.

Cliff notes;
All you need is the block and the head from the new motor. oil pan and valve cover as well.. ;)

Pull the engine and trans out as 1 complete unit. It's so much easier to unbolt the trans and intermediate shaft with it out of the engine bay.
