2001 honda accord idle problem

I have a 2001 accord v6 that just recently when you put the car in neutral or park the car will rev up and down instead of staying at idle. When you drive the car it seems to be ok but when you put it in park or neutral it will rev up and down not real high but it will not stay idle it will constantly rev. when you are driving and you stop it doesnt do it but only when in park or neutral. I am not real sure what it is so any help would be appreciated.

Re: 2001 honda accord idle problem

Probably your idle air control valve under the throttle body is sticking. Honda engines like my V-6 (2001 Honda Accord) have issues with carbon build up. One night I went to get gas and after filling up and starting the car I had to modulate the accelerator to keep the engine running (automatic). Do an internet search for cleaning the idle air control valve. Here's a link to a service bulletin. http://hondadude.webs.com/sb99085EGR.gif Hope it helps.

Re: 2001 honda accord idle problem

Some possible causes:
1. bad or dirty IAV and throttlebody as described above
2. vacuum leak
3. bad or dirty PCV
4. bad or dirty EGR (edit: Like the link says)
5. ELD gone bad

Check for codes first, it may point it the right direction. It can still throw a code even with the light off. Like the ELD code in my Civic- had the same symptoms as you and no light, came up with the ELD code, $30 and 2 minutes of labor later and it runs fine.

Check the coolant, please. Then follow the suggestions.

Re: 2001 honda accord idle problem

I checked the coolant level and it seems to be fine I looked around at a bunch of places online to see about cleaning the IACV and there was some good stuff but most pictures were of the 4cyl and as far as I know the IACV on the v6 is connected to the throttle body it is not its own seperate peice? I am not sure but I tried to take the throttle body off so that I could clean it. I took the air box off and disconnected all hoses and electrical connections to the throttle body took both nuts and both bolts out of the throttle body. Where I got stuck was getting the throttle body off it seems to be seazed on there pretty good. Am I doing this correct or is there another way? Also any suggestions as to how to get the throttle body off? I usually try to do work on cars myself but never dealt with any problems like this and dont want to damage anything and set me back.

Thanks for the help.
