Engine Code P1607
 

Hi,

First let me give details about my van:

Honda Odyssey
Year: 2000
Model:Ex

My check engine light (CEL) came on and upon checking, it is giving me the following code:

P1607/PCM/ECM internal error.

What does it mean and what do I need to change?

It first appeared on a cold evening, when I started my van to go back home from work. The van wouldn't pick up as if you put a vehicle with a manual transmission directly into 3rd gear. Once its picks up, it drives fine at high speed. Upon stopping and restarting the van, the problem went away, but the CEL stayed on.

Then this problem kept on coming back from time to time especially when it was really cold in the morning. The van would not pick up as I described above, but after driving to the next light or so and when it was warm enough, turning the engine off and turning it back on would solve the problem. During all this period since the problem first started, the CEL would some time go away but most of the time it stayed on.

So I took it to a transmission specialist and he checked the code and gave me the above code. He said that there is nothing wrong with the transmission but a faulty PCM is causing the transmission to behave in such a a way.

Can anyone please help me it? What do I need to do/replace/fix? How much the PCM costs?

The P1607 is likely being caused by a bad trace or solder joint on the circuit board inside the PCM. In cold temperatures, the components can contract and cause the trace or joint to pull apart, which causes a break in the circuit.

The cheapest and easiest way to solve this problem is to buy and install a used PCM from a salvage yard; these can usually cost anywhere between $50-150. Make sure to get one from another Odyssey that is the same year and trim level (LX, EX, EX w/nav, etc.) as yours, because there are some differences in the PCM depending on year and trim. New PCMs cost roughly $800, so that route isn't really worthwhile.

Keep in mind that the used PCM will need to be reprogrammed to recognize the immobilizer transponders in your ignition keys. After installation, the engine will not start until the immobilizer is reprogrammed. This procedure must be done with an HDS tool at a Honda dealership, so I'd suggest just having them install the PCM for you and reprogram it there on the spot if they're willing to do it.

One more question. Right now the temperatures are a bit warmer outside (around -5C) so I'm not having the transmission problem anymore (but I know it will happen once again once the temperature drops to -20C). So my question is that is there a potential for damage to the transmission, if I continue to drive with the faulty PCM in case:

a. I experience the transmission problem in cold weather?
b. I don't experience the transmission problem?

Without seeing exactly what the car is doing, I can't tell you.

The answer to that question is inconsequential though - just fix it and then you won't have to worry about it. Why would you continue to drive with the problem?

I have a 1999 accord 4 cyl. 2.3, I have the same code P1607 , in my case there is short inside the pcm , I have replace it twice and it keeps burning it, it wont go pass 3k rpms on cold days, you can have the keys programed at a locksmith shop sometimes there are better than the dealer, I was told that my alternator may be bad and that is why it keeps burning the pcm, I will do that next I just got another use computer, I hope this will helph you some, good luck.

Another tip, you don't have to go to the dealer to reprogram the immobilizer. Any locksmith that can make immobilizer keys can do the programming, and alot of them are mobile so they can come to you.

i have a 2000 civic si and it sat for a couple days and the battery was dead when i went outyesterday to start it so i jumped it with my truck it started normal and i let it warm up and when i took off it had some sputering and redlining at 3500 rpm and is showing a p1607 code wat do i do to fix it i cant figure it out wat to do please anyone

Hi can anyone help me out with this car i have a 2002 accord coupe 3.0 its has a p1607 my alternator was overcharging and i replace it ... i also replace the pcm after changing the alternator.. but code keeps coming back car runs perfect for 2 miles until code comes back then trasmission starts shifting weird speedometer flickers .. i checked all fuses and relays they seem fine please if anyone can help me with this i would really appreciate it..
