2003 Accord Couple Dash Display Problem
 

Hello. I'm having a problem with the display panel that shows the AC temperature, radio info and time. This is the thin rectangular display that is above the GPS screen. The display turns off randomly and flickers on/off on a random basis. It is a 2003 Accord Coupe with the factory GPS.

I have read that there is a problem with the PCB (printed circuit board) and that it needs to be replaced. Unfortunately my car has 130k miles on it so it is out of even the extended 100k warranty for the defective PCB. I called the dealer and they quoted me $1400 which is of course a joke and not even worth considering at that price.

I am a computer engineer and I am pretty effective at repairing circuit boards but I do not know how to open my dash and get at the PCB and the display itself.

I would be very appreciative if someone could direct me to a place within the forums where it can explain step by step the dash disassemble process so I can access the bad display that the circuit board that controls it.

I do not have a factory repair manual and the aftermarket ones are usually a waste of time so I was really hoping someone in the forums could help me. Thank you for your time.

Okay, I see it is the sub-display from the added picture in your original post. Here is some narrative info. first.

Display Unit
The dash mounted display unit uses a liquid crystal display (LCD). The LCD is a 7-inch diagonal thin film transistor (TFT), stripe type with 280,800 picture elements. The color film and fluorescent light are laid out on the back of the liquid crystal film. The display touch system consists of a grid of 20 vertical and 9 horizontal infrared beams shining across the screen, creating 180 sensing locations. When your finger interrupts these beams, or touches a hard button the signal is sent via the GA-NET bus to the navigation unit. Resting you fingers on the rim of the display can interfere with the touch function.

The display unit, audio unit, and climate control unit are serviced as a single assembly (Audio-HVAC Display Module)). These three components interact with each other via internal ribbon cable connections to a common "motherboard". The "motherboard" supplies the audio-HVAC sub display unit (upper display) with navigation clock time, driver's and front passenger's temperatures, and audio information.


Audio-HVAC subdisplay does not work properly
1. Check the clock. Reset if necessary. Does the clock reset? YES - The system is OK at this time. NO - Go to step 2.
2. Check for an open or short to body ground between subdisplay unit 10P connector terminal No. 4, No. 5, No. 6, No. 7 and navigation unit connector A (10P) terminal No. 4, No. 5, No. 6, No. 7. Are the circuits OK? YES - Replace the navigation unit. NO - Repair the circuits.

Now to remove the Audio/HVAC Display Module (Radio/navigation display unit), the remove instructions are pretty much the same as the link I include before or this:

The only difference is that yours with navigation has a few more electrical connectors in the back of the module.

Your problem may still lie in motherboard inside this assembly. But, with your expertise, you can probably fix the motherboard. Good luck.

Well, what do you know? The sub-display is probably the sole problem. You can either try to repair by re-soldering that or just replace it. Honda part number 39710-SDA-A41

Here is a link that shows even easier upper panel removal by just prying out from the sides of the panel; but, as noted, if you pry from the sides you can possibly damage the sides of the dashboard.

The problem really should be diagnosed before you go throwing parts at it. The service bulletin/warranty extension you are referring to (04-027) that says to replace the PCB is only applicable to non-navi cars. The display does not flicker on and off it simply goes dark so it can oly be read when an external light source hits it at the proper angle.

I know this thread is over 4 years old but just wanted to let someone know that the same thing was happening to mine. Popped it open and had to resolder a microcrack at the main (green) connector to the board.

Hi.
I have a problem with my 2006 accord with navigation. The subdisplay does not show the clock. The space for the clock is just blank. Every other thing on the display works fine. AC and audio displays fine. What could be the problem and possible solution to this? I have reset the clock on the main nav display a thousand times. I really need the clock.
