Smoke coming from steering column

Hello everyone! I had a strange issue this morning when I was warming up my car in this cold weather. As I was sitting in the car waiting for it to warm up, I noticed a fume of smoke lightly coming from the steering column. It was coming from the left side where the headlight turn signal switch is located in the car.

I have a 2002 Honda Civic Si. Has anyone ever encountered this? I did a few Google searches and found that this has happened in Escorts and other make and models, but nothing regarding an EP3. Most forums that I ran across with a similar issue is either the ignition switch or headlight turn signal switch. Before I go run out and start buying replacement parts, I guess I am seeking for any experience that anyone may have regarding this.

Needless to say, I turned the car off and have not turned it back on fearful of shorting out anything. Before I start to disassemble the steering column looking for the damage, I guess I just wanted to see if there are any other people out there that may have had this problem and could perhaps suggest some helpful hints for me. By far am I a mechanic, so any assistance would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks!

Start removing panels/parts and switches looking and smelling for burnt parts...

Do you have any add on accessories? Like gauges or etc?

Ya I would go with what Spaz said... start removing panels and start smelling and looking for burnt parts!

That's Spaz and Dave. I will start removing parts this weekend due to work and post what I find. I do not plan on driving the car until I figure what is wrong with it. To answer your question, there are no gauges or internal aftermarket parts on the car. I purchased the car from a coworker and it appears that the only thing he did electronically was a car alarm and a sound system with CD deck.

More to come when I can get to it this weekend... :)

Anyways yeah if you could physically see smoke, you will without a doubt will be able to find the source via visual and smell.
