Stupid H22 Timing Belt Tensioner!!!!!
Ok guys, So I have to replace my Timing belt.
I took it off, then realized there was an "auto" tensioner. I dont know what to do now! I dont have the money to convert to manual tensioner. Someone said there is a special tool for the auto tensioner. Where do I get it? Is this it? http://www.preludeonline.com/images/...tensionerB.jpg Also is this the correct part number for the tensioner tool? 14540-P8A-A01 |
Re: Stupid H22 Timing Belt Tensioner!!!!!
Man, if you're doing the timing belt change, I would change it to the manual tensioner. It's not that expensive. Just remember, if the auto tensioner fails, bye bye engine!
I have a spare F22. I am not sure if it will have all the required parts for the manual timing belt tensioner. If it does, I might be able to help you with those parts. If you are really in a bind and have to use the auto tensioner, let me know. I have a spare with the tool. PM me. |
Re: Stupid H22 Timing Belt Tensioner!!!!!
Thanks man I really appreciate it.
I just started looking around in my garage for something to make a tool out of, long story short, we made a homemade tool, got the timing belt on. So Im pretty happy. BUT. When I was messing with the tensioner, like a TINNNNYYYY bit of oil leaked out, so I put in like 2 drops of brake fluid, is that ok???? |
Re: Stupid H22 Timing Belt Tensioner!!!!!
so you changed the belt and reused the old auto tensioner??? if thats the case :ugh:
|
Re: Stupid H22 Timing Belt Tensioner!!!!!
sounds sketchy bro... im putting mine back together next month and i think im gonna switch to a manual one.... i know it might be pricey and a pain in the ass. but you know as well as i do buying one is better than trying to find another h22 for cheap. and in good condition like ours.

Re: Stupid H22 Timing Belt Tensioner!!!!!
Wait.. where did you put brake fluid?
|
Re: Stupid H22 Timing Belt Tensioner!!!!!
They can be refilled and reused but brake fluid is VERY different than oil, brake fluid is glycol based and actually is made to absorb moisture unlike oil. You can use a flat blade screwdriver to remove the maintenance bolt on the top to refill it with oil.
I just looked at the parts for the F series tensioners, most of the parts are the same but some are different but even new from the dealer it's not expensive to switch. |
Re: Stupid H22 Timing Belt Tensioner!!!!!
I didnt know that you had to change the tensioner.
Like litterly guys, I out 2 tiny drops in. Plus im selling in the summer so do you guys think it will be fine? Why would honda put suchhhhh a shittyyyy tensioner on the h22?? But on the lower engines like f22 and h23 decide to be smart and have a normal tensioner?? |

You're suppose to put in engine oil; not brake fluid. I hated those factory H22 auto tensioners, and thats why I went with H23 Manual Tensioner conv. |
Re: Stupid H22 Timing Belt Tensioner!!!!!
Wait wait.
So the tesnioner is just filled with regular engine oil? And it gives it enought preasure to tension the belt.? Weird. Well I got the TB set perfect, Now Im just trying to do the Balance belt and its a pain in the but, I set it but its one tooth off. |
Re: Stupid H22 Timing Belt Tensioner!!!!!
Also on one of the pulls for the balance belt, there are two marks on it, how do I know which one to set it to?
|
Re: Stupid H22 Timing Belt Tensioner!!!!!
Set it to the mark on the oil pump for the rear balancer, the one on the gear housing is for when your removing the gear so that you have it lined up to put a pin in the maintenance hole on the back of the block.
|
Re: Stupid H22 Timing Belt Tensioner!!!!!
Yeah, there's a hole known as a maintenance hole located just behind the block on the driverside. Hayne's manual says to put a 6x100mm bolt in the hole to lock the rear balance in place, so it doesn't move around when you install the balancer belt.
I just did this balancer belt install on my uncle's '94 Honda Accord EX SOHC VTEC cause I had to replace the water pump and t-belt on it. |

There are 3 pullies. Middle bottom is crank pully, above it is tensioner and then there are a pully on ech side of the tesnioner, the one on the left is easy to set, But the pully on the right has two marks on it, How do I know which one to set? And is this the pull where you said you can screw bolt or something to keep it from moving around? |
Re: Stupid H22 Timing Belt Tensioner!!!!!
Seriously get a Helm's, it will explain everything. But yes, the pulley on the right. On the backside of the block right next to the pulley is a fairly large maintenance bolt; you unscrew this and then put a 6x100mm bolt (a screwdriver can work too) into the hole; slowly rotate that balance shaft until the bolt goes in deeper and locks the shaft into place. As mentioned, there is also a mark on the pulley and a mark on the block (it's basically a 'slash' that sticks out a little at about the 5 o'clock position referencing the pulley), but it can be tricky to line that up just right, especially if you don't know exactly what you are looking for.
The updated auto tensioner should be fine for a stock VT. There were problems with the original ones, but Honda updated them and I personally would recommend them over the manual tensioner for a stock build since it will keep the correct tension without having to check and adjust it. The auto tensioner I believe holds less than 1oz, so yes, even 2 drops is significant and at least you put something back in. Oil is the recommended fluid I think, but I have doubts that brake fluid will hurt it. The tensioner is mainly a spring; I suspect the oil is basically just a lubricant. |
Re: Stupid H22 Timing Belt Tensioner!!!!!
yeah that would make sense.
And when I say two drops, Thats how much I tried to put in but not much actually got inside. Well. Im going to do the balance belt today and Ill let you guys know if it went well. Also. Can I start the engine JUST to see if the timing belt it set right if the balance belt isnt set right. Like my TB is set perfect. But my balance belt is one tooth off. Is it safe to start for like 5 second ? |
Re: Stupid H22 Timing Belt Tensioner!!!!!
Yeah it'll just have a slight vibration. You don't need to start it though to check timing, as long as you can turn the crank by hand using a socket on the crank pulley bolt and everything goes back to TDC after like 3 rotations then it will be fine.

Re: Stupid H22 Timing Belt Tensioner!!!!!
Well I got it finished and when I started it it makes a reallllyyyyyy weird sound from the timing belt area.
I started it before I put the balance shaft belt on and it made the same sound. Any idieas? |
Re: Stupid H22 Timing Belt Tensioner!!!!!
Its most likely because you reused the auto tensioner.
|
Re: Stupid H22 Timing Belt Tensioner!!!!!
Just download the HELMS for free. Im not sure of the site, But Im sure google can help you. Just do it right, take a short cut and it will cost you. Trust me I already blew a H22.
|
Re: Stupid H22 Timing Belt Tensioner!!!!!
What am I supposed to do? I put it on all right. and the tesnioner is in good condition it wouldnt make a screaching sound because of it.
It sounds like as if A bearing went out or something. |
Re: Stupid H22 Timing Belt Tensioner!!!!!
Is it rubbing the plastic cover?
|
Re: Stupid H22 Timing Belt Tensioner!!!!!
no.
It was making the sound even before. And when I tried to turn the cams with a wrench it wouldnt turn it just jumped a tooth or two. WHY??? I dont understand isnt the whole TB supposed to turn? |
Re: Stupid H22 Timing Belt Tensioner!!!!!
you can't turn the motor over by the cams. You need to get the Honda manual and read because you are going to bend some valves.
|
Re: Stupid H22 Timing Belt Tensioner!!!!!
oh.
So your not supposed to be able to turn the motor with the cams? Even if a timing belt is set right it would still mess it up if you turn it by the exhaust cam? |
