Screeching Noise!!!
I'm beginning to here a loud screeching noise when I take off from a stop. This started shortly after I installed my new oil pan. Anyone have any idea what this noise can be? It's pretty embarrassing and would like to get rid of it asap! Thanks!

Re: Screeching Noise!!!
It could be belt-related (or anything attached to the belt, ie. tensioner, p/s pump, etc...).

Re: Screeching Noise!!!
Most likely a belt. Does it go away after acceleration? This happened to me and I replaced my power steering and a/c compressor belts and.....gone!

Re: Screeching Noise!!!
well at first it started off as a little rattling noise, so I assumed it might be the exhaust since I had to drop the down pipe to install the oil pan. Now it's making a really loud screeching noise that comes and goes. It doesn't sound like a belt, it kind of sounds like metal scraping on metal. You think it's still the exhaust?

Re: Screeching Noise!!!
I see, then yea it probably is the exhaust. Maybe a loose fitting vibrating from acceleration? I guess just get underneath the car and check out the exhaust fittings, make sure all the hardware is still there and what not.

Re: Screeching Noise!!!
Yea, I'll go ahead and get under the car and check for any contact being made to any heat shields and check all the hangars. I do recall that the donut gasket where the header and downpipe meet falling off while installing my oil pan. I put it back on when bolting everything back together; do you think that's the problem?

Re: Screeching Noise!!!
FYI I installed the donut gasket with the curved part making contact with the header. Did I install it incorrectly?

Re: Screeching Noise!!!
I believe that is correct.

Re: Screeching Noise!!!
I inspected my exhaust and everything was okay. Can it be the rotors? I let up on the brake from a stop and it begins to screech. It also makes the noise when I reverse and gets worse as I speed up.

Re: Screeching Noise!!!
I've done some research and found the same issue in a bmw 3 series forum. They say it sounds like a samauri sword being dragged on concrete, which sounds exactly like my problem! lol Some say it's debris or a pebble caught in between the brake pad and rotor, so I'm going to give it a clean tomorrow. I'll let you know if it fixes the problem.

I'd def like to know what's u cause this has me stumped

Re: Screeching Noise!!!
Just completed a brake job and it resolved the problem. It seems to me that the noise was the brake pad wear sensor doing it's job. Replaced the brake pads and resurfaced the rotors using the diy in the faqs. Had no problems at all.

Re: Screeching Noise!!!
First time I drove on the highway since my brake job and my steering wheel shakes a little bit at about 70 mph. Is it necessary to balance your wheels after you've resurfaced the rotors and replaced the brake pads?
|
Re: Screeching Noise!!!
you do not need to balance your tires after a brake job that has nothing to do with teh shacking... if just started or you just noticed it.. check your lower control arm bushing that may be the problem ?

did you use cheap rotors? they could be out of balance

Are they aftermarket wheels? If yes, are they hubcentric? If they are not hubcentric, you need some hubcentric rings or you could tighten the lugnuts when the wheel is still up in the air
