2000 Honda CRV ignition problems

I'm hoping somebody here can help. I've had my 2000 CRV for just over a year now. We bought it used but only one person had ever owned it and she took AMAZING care of it.

A couple of weeks ago, we were driving to an appointment and the CRV just cut off. We had it towed to a mechanic and were quoted almost $1000 to fix it. We were told the ignition control module, ignition coil, ignition rotor, and distributor cap needed to be changed. We've replaced the distributor cap and ignition rotor but the truck still won't start. We also replaced the spark plugs and spark plug wires. It tries but the engine just won't engage.

Is the ignition control module and coil something we can replace ourselves? Because we just can't afford to pay a mechanic the outrageous prices we've been quoted to fix my truck. (Yes, I call my CRV my truck.)

Help? We've got the service manual book for Honda CRVs and Acuras and my husband's looking through it tonight to see if he can figure things out. I really, REALLY want to get this fixed. I miss my truck!! :scared:

Coil and ICM can easily be replaced, if you buy them new from honda they are expensive. You can get them aftermarket, used (can come from any 97 - '01 CR-V, '92 - '00 Civic, '92 - '01 Integra or '93 - '97 Del Sol. You can also get an aftermarket distributor from distributor king, most other replacements are of poor quality.

These cars also have defective valve guides and are known to burn valves because of it. This would cause the car to behave like it was having an ignition problem. This is a very common issue. Just went through this a year ago on our 2000 CRV. Was well over $1k to fix it. Be sure to get the engine compression tested before you waste money on any other repairs.
