87 Civic: How to replace wheel bearings?
Hello, Honda techies,
I've got an 1987 Civic, and I need to replace the front left wheel bearing. It makes noise while rolling down the street. Where can I find a procedure for How to replace that? I am semi-mechanical, but I've never worked on this car before. Thanks very much, in advance. Mark1127 |

This procedure is in any Haynes or factory service manual. If searching here doesn't net anything, there may be a detailed write-up on red pepper racing dot com. The short of it off the top of my head is 1. remove wheel (19mm socket) 2. remove brake caliper (17mm socket or box end wrench) 3. remove axle nut (pneumatic or electric impact gun helps here, 32mm socket) 3. remove knuckle/hub to strut bolts (17mm) 4. pop lower lower control arm ball joint loose (hammer and prybar) 5. pop outer tie rod ball joint loose (harbor freight ball joint separator) 6. remove axle from knuckle/hub, let the axle hang in the transmission, knuckle/hub should be on the bench by now. 7. press out old bearing (hydraulic press, or your local auto or machine shop) 8-...press in new bearing and put everything back together

Wow.
ball joint separator... hydraulic press... special tools that I don't have. Maybe the $130 (labor) that the local mechanic quoted is not a bad idea. Thanks very much for your reply, Grex. |

That gives me a much clearer view of the whole process, Gabe.
Again... with the Special tools... I'm leary of starting this project. Still... Thanks a Bunch ! |

You can rent those tools my friend from your local auto parts place.

I guess it depends on how quickly you need it done. A good shop will have this done for you same day.
