EPS Control Module Location?

Does anyone know where the power steering control module is located and the level of difficulty on this procedure? I've been told by a dealer that that's what I need and they want $1100.00 parts and labor. I think I'll be tackling this my self if I feel comfortable enough.

Thanks

Re: EPS Control Module Location?

It's complicated job you have to pull the whole dash according to the manual. But maybe if you have small hands you could "sneak it out" without removing the whole dash.

EPS Control Unit Replacement
NOTE: The EPS control unit is located in the center of the dashboard.

1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

2. Remove the driver's instrument under panel.

3. Remove the motor relay (A), and disconnect the 4P connector.

4. Remove the EPS control unit (B), and disconnect the EPS control unit connectors.

5. Install the EPS control unit in the reverse order of removal.

6. After installation, start the engine, and let it idle. Turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock several times. Check that the EPS indicator does not come on.

Thanks for that info. When you say that i may have to remove the whole dash, are you reading this from a service manual for an 07 fit? I read the same thing online but it was from an earlier year Honda Jazz. Not sure if maybe this part was relocated in later years but the technical service bulletin that honda issued for this repair lists the shop time for this job at 0.6 Hours. you'd think it would be listed as taking much longer if the dash had to come apart.

Thank You,

Willy

Re: EPS Control Module Location?

That info is from a 2005 repair manual. I would think if you removed your console and looked in that area you should be able to see it. Maybe you could do it with your fingers blind or possibly just remove your radio or maybe the glovebox for more room.

Possibly you could get it done under warranty check (fitfreak) there is a bunch of posts about this and there is a bulletin from Honda extending the warranty on this part BUT some dealers don't know about the bulletin or just don't feel like doing it. Print out the bulletin and bring it with you that usually helps.

Re: EPS Control Module Location?

Yea, when you talk about some dealers not wanting to deal with stuff, that's exactly what I've found. I finally had to call corporate Honda and file a product complaint and request a goodwill repair. It'll be a week tomorrow that I've been without a car. I figured I would just do the fix my self if they say no but have since found out that it requires using a Honda Diagnostic System to calibrate the torque sensors after the new unit is installed. I obviously don't have one of these so I'm pretty much screwed. I'm just hoping for the best when that phone call comes in from corporate Honda.

Good luck, man. For a "noob", you have done a great job in asking the right questions and exploring your options. Unlike many, you did not lay down and act like a door mat for a greedy dealer.

Re: EPS Control Module Location?

Well, I decided to call American Honda since it's been five days now since I filed my complaint. They informed me that they did have some notes about my case but it was never officially given a case number or forwarded to a case manager. In other words it was just sitting in limbo. They apologized up and down and said they would mark my case as URGENT and get back to me on Monday. I'm hoping the fact that they screwed up and forgot about me plays into weather or not they cover this repair.

Keep after them they will try and stall so you give up and go away.

Re: EPS Control Module Location?

Pretending to help you makes you feel better (for a while) and pretending doesn't cost Honda anything.

Re: EPS Control Module Location?

Maybe they'll pretend like they're supposed to help a loyal customer who's owned six of there cars and currently owns a three year old one with steering issues instead of pretending like the EPS Module cares that the car has 69K on it.

Re: EPS Control Module Location?

Just got a voice mail from the case manager at American Honda. He said that if the decision had been made by the district rep not to do a goodwill repair (which it has) that he'll be sticking by that decision. He's going to call the dealer and the rep for verification and call me back. Not good news especially after my car has been sitting at a dealer for ten days and I was starting to think things were looking up. I've filled out the complaint form on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website and I'll be waiting to hear from the guy before I click send.

Re: EPS Control Module Location?

Crap!!! That just sucks! The few complaints that I have read regarding EPS failure really concern me. One of the Fit features that I most enjoy is the precise steering in "canyon carving". The thought that this could fail at any time without warning concerns me A LOT!!!! And for Honda to say "tough shit, pay the dealer his $1100.00", is criminal!. :thud: Thanks- one more worry to carry around every single day.

Re: EPS Control Module Location?

Maybe a used one will not need to be reflashed with the Honda tool?

Re: EPS Control Module Location?

I was looking at used ones thinking the same thing but I'm thinking that a new one may be an updated improved part. I'm also concerned that if there's one on the used market that it may be a bad one.
