1998 Honda Accord 4 Cylinder with CEL P0170 and P0171
 

I have a 98 Honda Accord EX with 133k miles on it. Fully serviced from Local Honda Dealer in Houston till 100k miles after that I started taking her to a local guy for oil changes. Yesterday all of a sudden CEL came on. I drove it down to my mechanic shop and he gave me these 2 codes P0170 and P0171. He said he dont work on CEL problems. He said that I might be better off going to a senior Honda mechanic. The front O2 sensor was replaced at the 100k mile service. What are my options is this a simple fix or should I be ready to cough up some serious money. Thanks Guys Plus I am local in Houston, TX if any one can recommend me to a local Houston Honda Mechanic I will appreciate it.

Do you have a hi-flow air filter like K&N?

A code P0171 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
1) The MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor is dirty or faulty. Note: The use of "oiled" air filters may cause the MAF to become dirty if the filter is over-oiled. There is also an issue with some vehicles where the MAF sensors leak the silicone potting material used to protect the circuitry.
2) There could be a vacuum leak downstream of the MAF sensor.

Your Accord doesn't use a Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, so that wouldn't be it.

Some of the common causes are that your fuel injector screens may be clogged or the fuel pressure regulator needs to be replaced.

How do I clean out the injector screens. My gas mileage is down the drain. I only got 143 miles out of 10 gallon tank. Any simple diy for the injector cleaning or do I need to take it to the mechanic

Well the best thing would be to measure the fuel pressure first. However, on a cost/benefit basis, if you do not have a fuel pressure gauge or are not going to a mechanic first, this is how I see it:

1. Try a fuel injector cleaner like Techron ($7 - $8). BG 44 is good stuff; but, way more expensive than Techron. Going to a shop for a fuel injection cleaning will probably run you from $50 - $100. If your injectors were clogged that bad to dropped your fuel mileage so much, a fuel injection cleaning may not do much.
2. The fuel pressure regulator is like $30 - $40 and is relatively easy to replace yourself; so, not a big hit if it turns out not to be the problem. Gas prices being so high these days, if you don't fix the problem quickly, the cost of the excess gas use will be more than the eventual repair.
3. In Honda's newsletter, they refer to it being possible clogged injector screens, and recommend replacing the injector if debris found. Well the injectors are $70 - $100 each, not including labor. If it turns out to be the injectors, that would be the highest cost.

Use a genuine O2. The sensor you installed is probably biased.

The detailed instructions on your site for testing the ignition switch were INVALUABLE. My original ignition switch was replaced in 2002 as part of the nationwide recall. Guess what? Recently, I encountered intermittent episodes where my Honda's engine cut out completely without any warning. I'm lucky to be alive. Even though no warning lights ever came on, I was told it was probably bad gas or something similar. Honda headquarters techs denied there was any problem.
Problems were intermittent, but one evening traveling over 50+ mph on the LIE, the dashboard lights and engine completely cut out, then came back on 3times in rapid succession. Stopped the car and removed the key from the ignition- it was BURNING HOT. My suspicions went back to the ignition switch. Thanks to your tetsing instructions, my suspicions were confirmed. I called Honda headquarters again. This time I was told that if I took it to a Honda dealer and the dealer confirmed, it would be replaced free as a "2nd recall". And yes, they now acknowledged being aware this was a problem. My ignition switch was replaced free; however, after contacting the NHTSB about this situation months ago, haven't heard of a second recall being ordered.
