g23 build question

hello. this may seem like a stupid question. but here it is. is there a better year f23? I have a 98spec f23 that I will be using for my g23 vtec build. but before I tear it apart and drop in all the parts for it I just want to make sure that my choice of the 98spec block was a good choice.

Re: g23 build question

they are my block of preference for any HF23...55mm mains, solid girdle, and an H22 87mm bore capability make it a winner in my books...

think of the torque from an 87x97 configuration...

good luck with this swap

Re: g23 build question

I have a good amount of the parts already just making sure the 98spec was a good choice! well time to start the fun. my pump is back from the machine shop and starting assembly this saturday! I am shooting for the 300 range. but we shall see! I will make a build thread soon! thanks for the quick responses!

Re: g23 build question

Is your block an A1 or A5?

300 range? What is the breakdown of your setup?

KB91Hatch 02-17-2009 07:10 AM

Re: g23 build question

its an a1. and this is what's going in it - K20a 11.5:1, H22 head, Crane roller rockers, Skunk2 High comp valves, Skunk2 Pro 2 Cams, Skunk2 Springs and retainers, Skunk2 Pro Cam Gears, Twm ITB, have not chose a header yet I am actually trying to wait for bisimoto to finish their h22 header, Kaizen speed Balancer shaft removal, Clutchmasters stage 2 Clutch
Fidanza 10.5lb flywheel,
Hmotors Single belt crank pully, Mfactory oil cooler. I am hoping for 300 but will probably end up in the 260-280 range.

Re: g23 build question

oh forgot th add gtting the head milled also. I want to end up at 12.2:1. I want the build to be a pump gas hero!

seems alot of people are doing the G builds.....goodluck man hope you show us some pics

Re: g23 build question

Your setup is real close to my original build... I had a little higher CR with PRO3's and did 249.8whp on pump gas. You will definately need some head work to achieve anywhere near 300whp. Good luck on your build!

Oh yea... SSR header is the way to go!

Re: g23 build question

hmmm maybe I will have to bore it a couple mm over and run higher compression. and use more aggressive cams.

Re: g23 build question

I have a guy doing my head work. he does an amazing job. bathtub style port and polishing!

If your thinking about going a couple mm over you may want to look into replacing the stock aluminum sleeves (w/iron liners) with some 100% iron sleeves Darton or Golden Eagle sleeves.

Re: g23 build question

I might have to look into doing that. thanks for the info.

Re: g23 build question

ok so one last question. I might scrap the k20a pistons and go with something around the same compression like 12:1 around 88-89mm bore. should I go with an aftermarket k20 piston because of the wrist pin design and the fact that the valve reliefs fit or something else?

GhostAccord 02-18-2009 01:59 AM

Re: g23 build question

No. You should look into getting a set of 88-89mm F23 pistons. If your going to pay for sleeves and forged pistons you might as well do it right. Don't screw around with off the shelf stuff that is not made for your block & head. The only reason people use the K20 pistons is because they are tryign to do it on the cheap. Go to raceengDOTcom and get in contact with them. I bet it will surprise you how little it will cost you for a set of 88-89mm F23 pistons that are made to run with your setup.

I was thinking about going the K20/24 piston route with my build until I talked to the boys at Race Engineering. After talking with them I ended up ordering a set of H22 Carrillo Super A's (484g) and a set of custom Wiseco 11.5:1 89mm pistons (358g) for only a few bucks extra.

Give them a call and see if they can help you out. Doesn't hurt to ask someone who deals with this stuff on a daily basis.... They probably have a few different kits that they can put together that would fit your build and budget.

hey thanks a lot for the info I will definatly be calling them. everyone has been a huge help. it may take me a bit longer now. but at least it will be done correctly.

Re: g23 build question

Quick question,, i'm using an 94 h-22 head w/an 98 f-23 block, the h-22 timing belt teeth do not fit the f-block's water pump pulley or the main crank pulley. What to do?! The h water pump will not fit the f block. Or can i just change the cam gears or what?

Re: g23 build question

Timing belt wont fit. H-22 timing belt on f23 pulleys (water pump and main Crank pulley. What to do?

Re: g23 build question

the thread is from 09 but i'll help you out get the h22 water pump gear and press it to the f23 water pump by pulling it with a gear puller then get the h22 timing belt crank pulley the little pulley where the timing belt wraps around and put it on the f23 crank. After all that get the timing belt on and your good to go.

Did you cover the two oil port holes on the head? don't just slap the head on there oil will be everywhere but im sure you did that. I did it on an f22a1 block works perfect

Re: g23 build question

Thanx that was my first plan! I did cover the one whole that the f23 head gasket did not fit or cover but my friend said the head gasket covers the other hole good enough to just torque it down properly. Should i take it apart and fill the other even though it's fully Covered?and tight?

Re: g23 build question

yeah cover both the one on the back is slightly uncovered so it will still leak and the one towards the front definitely leaks if not covered.

Do you have it torqued down already? get copper gasket spray and spray the head gasket with that until its orange since you torqued it down or you will have other leaks.

Thanx i filled both holes. I just need to Find a Jackson power steering bracket for the Supercharger
The company moss racing doesn't have them anymore
now, i wonder who sells or has that type bracket for the Prelude?

What did you use to cover the holes? I'm looking at using K20 pistons when I rebuild my motor not sure if I will have valve clearance with the stock head I need to dig deeper into that. but later this year I'm thinking of building a G23 or swapping out for an H23 blue top vtech not sure yet. problem with the H23 is that I have a 5 speed instead of an auto so I would have to do something about the ecu.

Re: g23 build question

Well i used rtv sealer a hole lot of it and let it dry for a hole day or two. You can use k20 pistons they won't hit the head but you need to cut the valve reliefs for the k20 pistons cause they go in with the intake side valves to the exhaust valve side. And for the h23 you can use your trans and the harness.
