Re: wheels still spins while in gear?

try :
putting it in 5th
or better, loosen the lugs while the car is on the ground

Re: wheels still spins while in gear?

thats not the problem. lets say i park it on a hill and i stick it into first gear and let off the E-brake. it still rolls down the hill, it doesnt lock.

Re: wheels still spins while in gear?

It depends on how steep the hill is. The only force holding your car still when it is in gear is the force it takes to push your engine through a compression stroke.

Re: wheels still spins while in gear?

im not understanding...
arnt your front wheels supposse to lock up with you put it in 1st gear with the car off? lets say i want want to jack up my car. i put it into gear so the front wheels can lock, but when i do that, it dosnt lock up. my car still moves.

Re: wheels still spins while in gear?

I always park mine in reverse, probably because I got used to my Camaro - it has 'reverse lockout' (you have to put it in reverse to lock the steering wheel and get the key out).

I have the same question....loosen lug nuts before you jack the car.

How steep of a hill? As someone said earlier try 5th.

Have you had the car on when on the jackstands and the wheels still turn?

I've started my car when its on jackstands in nuetral and the wheels instantly start turning forward, and keep turn unless I stop them. What causes that? No LSD?

I really wanna have someone explain this.

Re: wheels still spins while in gear?

when your in 1st gear it only depends on what your gear ratio is for that gear (shorter gear is less resistance). thats why you put it in 3rd-5th because those gears have alot more resistance. Putting it in first is not gonna do much. It will roll away because the motor is too easy to spin. Nothing locks when you put it in gear lol.

As far as it turning with it not being in gear, im not sure about that lol.

just to be clear, are you jacking up both sides or just one at a time (the other wheel is on the ground)?

if the other is not on the ground, even in gear the wheel will spin freely because the differential is doing it's job.

Wow, in the 11 or so posts here, this is the only one that actually notices the op's problem.

The Op's problem: There is no problem

OP: The solution to your problem is simple - there is no problem.

What is wrong with your transmission? Nothing.

Any operating manual will tell you to break the lug nuts loose while the car's full weight is on the ground, NONE will tell you to break them loose while the car is in the air - they are right - for good reason.

You ask "shouldn't the wheels be locked while it's in gear?" - if the car is on the ground, yes.

You have something called a differential, which transfers power between the wheels. This differential has a little side effect.

While your car is in the air - as in the whole front end is off the ground, if it's in neutral, you spin a wheel, nothing happens - why? It's in neutral.

If you put your car in the air - again, as in the whole front end is off the ground - and you put it in gear, and spin one wheel, the other wheel WILL SPIN IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. It will NOT be locked.

The reason why your car won't roll on a hill if it's in gear is simple: It's impossible for the car to roll in one direction while one wheel is spinning in the other (well, generally impossible).

The simple fact is you don't know how your car works - which is fine, we're all here to learn.

If you park on a hill you will be fine. Yes, your wheels are supposed to spin (in opposite directions) if the car is in gear.

Now, there's about to be a flood of idiots in here saying:
"No, they won't spin in opposite directions, that's only if you have a limited slip diff (LSD)."

Okay, so I haven't executed this group of morons yet, but when it warms up I will nicely make a video of me spinning one wheel while the car is in the air on my open differential and how the other one so eloquently spins in the other direction. If their LSD claim was true, cars with open differentials (stock) would roll on hills while in gear - but they don't.

*sigh*

EDIT:
PS:
For god's sake, please break the damn lug nuts loose while the car is on the ground, so that the wheel does not spin. It'll save you lots of head aches and will save people like me who have to read this even more headaches.

If you can't put your car on the ground have somebody depress the brake pedal - that will lock the wheel - you can loosen it that way.

Also note: The brake booster won't be functioning if the car is off - so they will have to push the brake pedal a lot harder than normal in order to lock the wheel.

Re: wheels still spins while in gear?

a car will roll down a hill while it is in gear. My friends car rolls down his driveway into the street into 2nd gear if he forgets to put the ebrake up.

Re: wheels still spins while in gear?

You know, you might just want to search "how to use and adjust E-BRAKE",
Honda didnt put it there for the sole purpose of showing your friends your car
can go sideways, its there to lock the back wheels to prevent role.

On another note, if your on a hill why would you want to put your transmission under those conditions of being a brake for your car.

SAVE A TRANNY USE YOUR E-BRAKE. IF YOUR SO JUST IN REMOVING LUGS FROM YOUR CAR IN THE AIR I SUGGEST YOU PURCHASE THIS:http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item....re&dir=catalog
