Bad Wheel Bearing? Axle? Weird Noises.

I get this weird noise, typically off throttle. I can hear it mostly in 3rd or 2nd gear around 15-40mph (note: the noise is not always present).

It sounds like similar to a tire rubbing noise, it's kind of a "whirwhirwhir whir" noise that seems to come from the front end. Pushing the clutch in does not change the noise.

It usually happens when I'm turning right, but I've heard it in a straight line too.

Do axles go bad? Do they make a noise when they go bad? I'm used to bearing noises being a general loudness, especially when the bad bearing is under load - and this doesn't seem to be the case.

sounds like a cv shaft is going out to me. when the axels are going bad they make sorta like a clicking noise when turning and when there about to break usually makes a noise going straight id would just get underneath the car an look at it for any play in the axels

I'll check it out this weekend. Is the play easy to see/feel? Jack up the car and push/pull the wheel?

Or should I be prying on something to see axle play.

i had a wheel bearing go at 95k and road on it for a while till it WENT...but it didnt make any noise just made the car shake under acceleration...try and turn the wheel side to side and top and bottom u understand what i mean by top and bottom is push and pull on the top and bottom

I did some analysis last night. The noise seems to be coming from the passenger side. I determined that turning left, decreases the noise. Turning right increaeses the noise.

This seems to indicate it's not a bearing, as the noise increases when the wheel is unloaded.

Part of the problem is the Bridgestone PO2s are fairly worn down and make a lot of noise. I'm not sure how much of what I'm hearing is tire noise.

But at slow speeds, where tire noise is low, I can hear the "wonka wonka wonka" noise coming from the front end.

i have 160k on the body of my accord, wheel bearing went bad after i put a new clutch and driver side axle in... replaced it last night... wheel bearing went out in 10 minutes...

So it seems like it's a bad bearing after all. I jacked the car up and I can get a lot of movement out of the wheel.

Funny, that bearing makes less noise when loaded than when unloaded.

Perhaps that's also where the vibration on the highway is coming from.

So the story is ongoing. I bought the bearing and my mechanic was ready to put it in, but noticed a bunch of play in the outer tie rod. So we replaced that instead. Bearing isn't showing any signs of play.

I'm still getting a weird bad noise when I turn to the right at relatively low speeds. I notice it infrequently at about 30 mph in 3rd gear, but once it starts I can push the clutch in, put the tranny in neutral and still get the noise.

It's kind of like a whirring binding grinding noise. Maybe more whirring than grinding. If I move the steering wheel left to right at 30mph, left to right, the sound goes away when turning left, comes on when turning right. Sounds like I have knobby mud truck tires mounted.

Granted, my Bridgestone Pole Positions are worn down big time, and they are kind of chewed up too. They literally howl at highway speeds.

I'm due for a new set of snow tires within the next month, so we'll see if this noise is related to tires.

Just a quick update. The noise was entirely due to my tires. The Bridgestone Pole positions that are pretty worn down.

We put on my winter tires and the noise went away completely.

Reading this thread I was just going to suggest it could be the tires. I've seen it happen many times where someone thinks its the wheel bearing or axle but it just comes down to having a bad tire or tires.

Good to see you solved it https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

my money is on the cv shaft, I had a similar problem

Ok. This is crazy. I am having the same problem coming from my right front end! But my tires are almost completely worn down (getting new ones tomorrow!) and so I am wondering if that is it now. I was worried it was the bearing but it could just be the worn down Bridgestones on my car. Haha. I guess I will see what happens with I put new tires on. I will probably throw it on the lift on Friday and do some chassis inspection. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

Let us know what the new tires do for your noise.

I really couldn't believe that tires could make the wonka wonka wonka noise I was hearing. But they were!!

I have a K20a swapped EM2 civic, and I am having a problem with something similar, although when I do a burn out, i will get normal wheel hop, but sometimes I will hear a loud bang and the car will jolt. It feels like it is coming from something that is connecting the wheels to the motor, but it is hard to tell. I have Bridgestone Fusion tires, which are a pretty hard rubber compound. I am using EP3 axles to connect the hubs to the motor

my girlfriends DA does the same thing...

Weird, but I'm glad you solved the problem. Who would ever know the 'tires' itself would be the first resort.

The tires were the first thing that came to mind when you said it made the sounds it did when you turned certain ways.

my neighbors accord does the same thing, i would say struts/shocks and springs, usually get pretty tired around the 100k mark.

Thanks bud, but I found out my sub frame was loose, and my sway bar.
