Speedometer problem, 2001 civic dx, 2 door
 

So I was driving home last night and noticed I was doing 110km in a 80km zone.

I soon realized that my spedometer was messed up when I came to a stop light and it was still reading that I was going 40km/hr.

So basically the spedometer is off.

Does anyone know what this problem may be? What part would I need to fix it and will it be expensive?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How many miles are on your car? My guess is that you need to replace the cluster. If you buy one used, they're rather inexpensive and easy to install.

There are 107,000 km on the car, hoping its not the timing belt, as I've heard they have to be changed around there as well, I've been reading about this "cluster," as well, I'd just like to get it fixed without breaking the bank but hey, I've had the car for about 5 years and haven't had to do anything major!! If you have a DX, you have a visteon cluster, these were extremely failure prone in the 2001 model year civics. Best repair solution, and upgrade is to get one out of a LX or SI, these were made by Nipon Seki and will have a tachometer, out of a coupe they will have orange illumination to match your interior, if you get one with ABS you may have to cut the led diode for the ABS indicator lamp. Accumulated kilometerage will be lost from your factory cluster, so whatever the new to you cluster has will show up in your car. Check local yards such as Cumberland, Nunavan.
