Vortech Supercharger kit. . . How are they?
 

So i was lookin into supercharging my b16 crx and i was wondering what anyone thinks of the vortech centrifugal kit. how good are they at making power and how well do they work for a set up like mine. any input would be greatly appreciated. thanks

power is linear, you make peak power at rev limit.

they are ok, but a properly sized turbo will outperform it hands down.

how are they when compared to a jackson racing S/C? Also my motor is fully built for boost (bottom end at least) its got a 9.5:1 CP and i was originally building it for turbo. but lately i've just been tossing around a few different ideas.

the vortech doesn't have the heatsoak issues the jrsc has, but the shaft often breaks.

I'd go with a procharger kit. mounts under the a/c in the bumper, intercooled, less extra crap to break off. IMO it's by far the best supercharger for a honda.

I have a procharger on a 99 civic si, and a jrsc on a 94 del sol (both with b16) and the procharger on stock boost out-performs the jrsc at 12 psi.

Ive had both the vortech and multiple turbo setups. The vortech was fun because no one really had it and it was very reliable with the occasional belt coming off. But there is no comparison to a properly setup turbo kit. I raced a b16 coupe with a 50 trim on 8 pounds and I was on 12 pounds with the vortech and we were dead even.

I had a friend with a procharger kit on his fully built B16 and he pushed the kit to the absolute limits and walked away with 303whp. My dseries is faster. http://images.honda-tech.com/set1//smile/emcrook.gif

I have a friend that's a tuner and he made 330ish on a gsr with a procharger. I'll have to see if I can find the video on youtube.

Here's a little Honda supercharger on a b16 comparrison of the stock systems:

Vortech 160 to 218hp and torque from 111 lb./ft. to 142 lb./ft. (that's flywheel hp/tq) If you take out 15% for power loss to the wheels it's 185whp and 120 tq.
Cost: $3800

Procharger From 132hp to 246hp at the wheels (can't find tq #'s)
Cost: $4000

JRSC from 138 hp 97 tq to 190.8 hp 138 tq (wheels)
Cost: $2200

sweet nice info. im really going to look into this. i think i would be the first one in my area to have a procharged crx sir. know anyone that is selling a used kit or where i can find one for less then $4400?

I got mine on ebay for $750, it was missing about $500 in parts, but less than $1300 for a $4000+ kit isn't bad.

I think there's 1 or 2 used ones on ebay right now.

A procharger still has a turbo compressor, which means it doesn't have the boost curve a jrsc does. The only benifit of the procharger is cooler IAT's and less 'invasive' of an install. A turbo is stil a better way to go, unless you're in Cali with the emissions Nazi's.

If you want real power (400+) turbo is the only way to go. But if you want to go with a supercharger system, the procharger, IMO, is the way to go.

Im also interested in the Procharger route? Though i havent really seen much info on them!!

I couldnt see any 2nd hand ones for a civic on ebay, but there were some brand new ones!! and they are still pretty pricy!!


They seem like a pretty good supercharger kit, as its so simple, just an intercooler and a belt driven blower!! When u compare it to the vortech system which has oil and water feeds left right and center, and takes up so much room in the engine bay!! They are a pretty simple kit, install time was under 8 hours.

It is just a belt driven blower. Uses the a/c belt to spin, pulls air from inside the bumper just in front of the driver side wheel. Sends it to a front mount intercooler, to the throttle body. comes with a blow off/surge valve.

If you black out the intercooler, it just looks like there's a cold air intake on it when you open the hood.

It's also a self contained unit, so there's no oil lines and all the extra bs that comes with the voretch kit.
