flush transmission fluid - can I use non-honda ATF

HI,

I'm thinking of flushing the transmission fluid on my honda accord 2000. The manual says that I should use Honda premium Formula Automatic Transmission Fluid (preferred) or DEXRON III ATF (temporary replacement).

I can get ATF from our hardware shop, but it is not Honda premium Formula. Does it matter if I added non-Honda Premium Formula ATF to my car? Thanks for any advice.

You will notice a difference between the two.

I would go with Honda ATF personally it's not pricey

If you're going to go with the standard advice and drain/fill/run x3 then you could use generic ATF for the flush process so long as you refill with genuine honda ATF at the end. Remember that each drain/fill cycle only replaces about 50% of the fluid in the transmission, so if you drain and add dexron you have 50% of the old, dirty fluid left and 50% fresh dexron. If you were to do another drain/fill cycle with honda fluid you're at 25% old, dirty fluid and 75% fresh fluid. 25% of the total fluid at this point will be dexron. Make sense? If not, then I'd just use Honda fluid. There is definitely a difference. You can leave behind a little generic dexron in the transmission, but it should mostly be Honda.

Thanks for all the reply.

I have a couple of other questions,

1) if I need to do drain/refill 3 times, what is the time interval between them? Couple of weeks?
2) how much should I put each time? 2 liters?

thanks.
