hood latch broken... how to get hood open

my friend had his EG broken into at PCC today and they broke the hood latch cable where it meets the latch under the hood. what can he do to open his hood now that he has basically... no cable???

any help would be much appreciated.

you could take off the front bumper and unbolt the latch...the latch would still be connected but you could get the hood open...just a thought. good luck.

that's a negative because there's screws for the bumper under the hood. obviously.. you haven't taken off your bumper before.

It might end up costing you a grill as well to get in to the hood latch.

grill on a EG? 92-95? man... it just goes to show you how many people don't know about honda's. if your referring to the bottom grill... it is not a separate piece from the bumper so it would have to be cut out. there is no upper grill on EG's fyi unlike the 96-00 models.

EDIT: try jacking it up and seeing where to go from there. Do you have a jack available?

jack it up and see where it goes from there. pretty sure that their be to much crap in the way before u get to the latch though lol. especially if he still has ac and power steering. did they break the whole latch off or is the little black piece still there? is it just wire thats left? i would recommend tracing the latch wire and yanking on it with some pliers or something. how the hell they break the latch? lol

your best bet is to jack up the car remove the under pan just behind the front bumper and try to reach up between the header and core support. If any of the cable is still left you could remove the lf inner fender and try openning it from there. good luck

i had the same sort of thing happen to me, and follow what instructor/daniel said, removed the splash guard and use a metal clothes hanger and try to hook the little latch deal that the cable was previously attached to.

You could also try to use a thin-tipped pry bar or a loooong screwdriver.

I do know EG`s because I have owned three of them, as well as an EF, two EK`s and a first, second, and third gen integra. And I build new Hondas every day for my job. I might know a thing or two about them, or maby I don`t.

there has to be some cable left, dig your hand between the grill through the bumper and up, or get someone with a smaller build to do it, tell them to look for the cable, it still might be there. just find it and tug, if its not cut then either follow the cable to see if its damaged, if it is then just cut the cable anywhere in the middle, slide the black cover off and pull the metal string.

i didn't ask anyone to GUESS on what to do and people that don't read the details about the post about what year the car is... i wanted someone who has knowledge on this situation. i stated clearly that there was no cable left and where to go from there. if you don't know... don't answer. http://is.rely.net/1-92-29998-l-1gbM...AmVuBW3hGg.gif

Jonnyb5 07-06-2008 03:04 AM

Not that this would answer your question on how you guys would do it but... Take it to a honda shop and have them figure it out. im sure they have come across the problem many times because by the looks of it a good number of people done know?

dont get upset at the OP. he is right. if you have dont know dont answer. why have him mess up his car or waist his time on misinformation.

the asshats are the idiots who are just giving suggestion to give them. not knowing what th F the are saying...

like stated above take out the splash guard and use a hanger to pull the latch.

its been 3 days and you still havent figured it out. Just play with it, stick a flatheat in there and pry it open.... doesnt take a genius to get the hood unlatched....

Re: hood latch broken... how to get hood open (daniel990836)

are you sure they broke the cable OR did they brake the handle i work in a shop and someones hood handle was broken all i had to do was use pliers to pull the cable back enough to pop the hood.
